The only way to travel is ferry to Bilbao or Santander and then go through the Pyrenees - otherwise its mile after mile of boring empty french motorway.

go by ferry via Dover to Dunkque on Norfolkline Nice and cheap 2 hour crossing and only1/2 hour up the road from Calais !

It would be the ferry for me every time (and yes I've tried them both).

The guys on the Ferry tie your bike down for you and contrary to an earlier posting you can watch them do it and even lend a hand if you feel so inclined!

Some of the newer ferries even have special bays for bikes where a device clamps your wheels into place so you have no worries.

The other advantage with the ferry is you can get a decent meal, something to drink and somewhere to relax...definitely something you cant do in the tunnel
