Hi,

I'm thinking about a 750ss seen a 97 spec carb model bike. Can anyone tell me what they are like for performance on the road? Good fun or boring. I just want something cheap to buy that I am proud to own and fun to ride.

We've just bought one for Sue - she liked riding the dd600ss so much she wanted one for the road.
The 750 carby is a lot smoother in traffic than the 900 carby, and a bit lighter too.
It has quite a bit more mid-range than a 600 (qed) but its top-end is 'only' similar to the 620i, but again it has more in the mid range.
That makes it easy to keep on the boil round the twisties without it feeling as hard work as the 600
Doesnt match the grunt of a 900 though
Given that I was in the fast group at Lydden on the dd620 playing with a bloke on an R6, I think that kind of power is enough to have fun with - it depends whether you want to get your kicks blasting the straights or surfing the bends

That's good food for thought. You don't happen to know what a looked after 21000 mile bike with history should go for. You think the mileage is too high?

Well, we bought payne_p's '92 with a 12000 mile engine (original was 38000) for 1250. In excellent nick except a small dent on the tank.
If its had regular oil changes, mileage is not a problem, and the belts have an easier time on the old small-crankcase engines, and changing them is easy-peasy anyway.
Personally, I am suspicious of bikes that *dont* get ridden enough (several of mine are getting like that ) as mileage means they are working
I sold my immaculate 900FE for just over 2k.
Make a low offer (even in a dealers) and play it by ear

Thanks for that. The bike is currently at £1000 but who knows what it will be once the auction ends.
I hope I'm doing the right thing going down this route - I wanted to keep a road bike going while racing in the 583 grid and thought this kind of thing might do the job. I havn't got a large budget to spend unfortunately otherwise I would be interested in your 620 I do have a soft spot for Guzzis too but am really thinking of a Ducati at the moment.
I wonder whether I would get bored of a 750 though considering I have owned two RSV Milles in the past

I have a 95 750ss and it is a lot of fun. Power and Torque are acceptable, and I am a bit of a porker, might be even better for a smaller lighter rider. It did not like the winter much and suffered from carb icing when it was cold and wet but apart from that it has been a good fun bike for not much money.
