Bah, one of my bolts has sheared on my rear sprocket carrier - fell inside the hub and rattled about before falling out. How rare is this? They're all original from 92. Time to ring Nelly at Cornerspeed...

Last week TWO of mine broke off.
Couldnt figure out what the banging was untill further investigation found two pins inside my rear wheel. As i was turning the wheel slowly to find the problem the pins where falling inside the hollow spoke section.
What do you think caused your problem ?

Two? Blimey. I've read that if they're over-torqued they can break. I've never had any problems before though. I think I'll replace all of mine.

I am going to replace the whole assembley including the sprocket carrier and wheel bearings. They look like big lumps of metal to me and there must be something wrong for them to break off at this time, and especaily two at the same time.
Funny thing that on a recent trip to Spain I had vibration from the rear end, but it would come and go. Maybe there is something a miss with the whole thing.
Any how I am changing the lot !

Did you have the older style, with a single 10mm thread? I believe later bikes had the stepped thread, the inner much thicker and stronger, as used on the 748/916 etc. Also, they screw into the carrier on a left hand thread, so they don't loosen when the nuts are torqued up. The older ones would/could tighten when applying a load of heft to undo stubbon, loctited nuts, thus over-torqing them in the carrier. That's my theory.

Yep mine are the older ones with single 10mm thread.
Have now replaced the carrier complete and wheel bearings.
