I think their argument is that the problem is not helped by incorrect valve clearance adjustment (which is true). To my knowledge Ducati have never admitted that there is actually a problem. Cam removal is still not in the service schedule.

Hmmm, FWIW, I wonder how much of the problem with reliability is actually down to the fact that folk have paid a lot of money and so they do get main dealer servicing. Dion't get me wrong, I kno wthere are and have been some very good and competent main dealers, btu there have certainly been some who have cashed in on selling expensive exotica and then charging exorbitent servicing, without a clue how to set the thing up or service it properly.
We have had problems with a main dealer and now always use independent specialists. Rich at Louigi moto is a classic example of how much more you can get out of your bike if it is set up right and how much more you can get for your money to boot.

Our problem is that Bristol is a long way from Scotland... anyone know a good independent up here..?

748IOM:

Going back to your question about what is it with a Ducati over other bikes such as an R1 ?

Last year I decided to take the plunge and get a modern sports machine.
I first test drove a Honda CBR600F and enjoyed the ride. Deciding I needed some comparison I then then test drove a GSXR600 and fell in love thinking this is the bike for me, or so I thought.

As I returned from my test ride the sales man (CMC Chesterfield) was quick to ask me how this faired over the CBR. Subconciuosly, I looked around and parked in my vicinity were 5 more blue and white GSXR's - lovely ride I commented but not very elusive (pointing at the other GSXR's with a 'well which one is mine' frown).

Thats when he dragged me over to the 748s - 'elusive he said, may be not but it's definately got more head turning appeal'. I test rode it two days later, paid the money and are still loving it !

Does that answer your question...

Moto748's 748E has 50000 miles on it. I think that's testament to reliability. He's not a thrasher but, it isn't garaged and is used in all weathers. The key, I think, to the reliability is proper servicing, regular oil changes with the right stuff, regular belt changes and so mechanical sympathy.

I'm glad you like your 748. It think they are wonderful and whilst they are somewhat behind Jap 600's in a straightline these days, all it takes is a few corners to put them in their place.

Yep, the 748 is a fantastic bike: Had mine third hand with only 3700miles on the clock, '98 bike bought in 2000. She now has almost 30k showing and is going strong. Only problems in the last 5 years are 1 rectifier & 1 expansion tank reservoir. Other than that, just regular servicing and always letting her tick over for a while before setting off: Not missed a beat on a number of trips to the south of France (where she now lives a life of luxury in a nice big barn!).
Must admit that whilst I adore the cornering performance/sensation, I am wondering what it would be like to have a little more power/torque (particularly on the more open 'nationals' down here): have therefore decided that I will treat my little beauty to an 853 upgrade when finances allow............ probably next winter.
