Roughly how many miles should I expect to get out of a pair of fronts? I have SBK3 pads on and the bikes done 14,500 miles, theres a few bits I want to buy for the bike, but I cant afford them and a new pair of discs!
Hard to say, really, DJ. Brake discs wear out in one of three ways:
[list=1][*]They warp (obviously you'd know if they are)[*]The carriers wear around the bobbins and the discs begin to rattle badly (again, easy to spot)[*]They become thinner. The minimum thickness should be stamped somewhere on the carriers. Measure them with a set of calipers and if they are below the minimum, replace them[/list=1]
Other than that, keep using them. They can get glazed but you can use a scotch pad to bring them back.
Thanks, I'll dig out the verniers tonight and check! Bike was only serviced 1000 miles ago and they didnt mention anything, though thats not saying much because they missed a loose clutch hub nut, with the resulting consequences
But using the likes of SBK3`s will reduce this, most people buy pads that are very good at stopping you , which is all well and good but some are very agresive on discs as with SBK`s.
There are pads equally good if not better (imho) that are cheaper and more importantly less agresive.
If you need discs have you looked at the DSC discount flyer on the for sale board ?
DJ, you can tell at a glance if your disc's re worn. There will be a ridge around the inner and outer edge of the rotor where the pad makes contact. If you estimate this to be excessive, then you can pull out the verniers for a more acurate measurment.
Are these available individually for OE rotors? Mine look to have ovalled and are rattling pretty badly, though the bobbins and rotors are in good shape. Any info appreciated Justin
