Right, so the plan with this 900ssie/1000ssie race bike being built was to run 999 wheels. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

What we have is a 1998 900ssie, with a 1000ssie engine fitted (well actually, it's a Multistrada 1000DS engine, with 1000ssie engine cases so that it would fit).

All this leaves us in an interesting situation...... Basically I have to look for parts for a 900ssie. And now to the 999 wheels.....

Front Wheel - wouldn't fit. Caliper offsets all wrong. So, I bought a set of 999 forks, which the bottoms will be screwed off and onto the SS forks. This should rectify the front wheel issue, although it's not _actually_ been fitted yet.

Rear Wheel - well, apart from need some spacers/sleeves machined up so the bearing would fit due to different spindle sizes, we've found out today that the 999 rear wheel won't fit either. Seems that although it fits nicely within the two swingarm forks, it is somehow offset by about 5mm, so that it doesn't run true. There doesn't appear to be any way to rectify this.

So, what I'm left with is a need for 900ssie rear wheels. But, now for the tricky bit, which ones will fit? Can anyone confirm that for the Supersport line, the rear wheel spindle changed from 17mm to 25mm somewhere around 2001? Is it just a change with the new curvey swingarm (which was 2002 I think). Can we fit 5 spoke wheels to the box ally style swingarm?

Basically, I need about 2 more rear wheels. I want them to fit easily at this point, and as a secondary factor it would be nice if they were as light as possible! (e.g. 5 spoke rather than 3 spoke or even aftermarket jobbies if anyone has suggestions)

Thoughts from the experts?

Phil I didn't think the rear spindle went up to 25mm if so its not linked to the change to the curveyer arm as the one I have from a late 900SSie certainly isn't 25mm.

i didnt think they ever put a 25mm rear spindle into the ss ie.
the wheels i had from couchie which were on his 1000sport ie had the small spindle at the rear and i had to change the bearings for them to fit onto the monster swing arm and make up spacers as the offsets were different.
do you want to sell your 999 front wheel if its the lw alloy and you find it doesnt fit? can do a px on a carbon one

I am pretty sure that the SSie rear axle is 17mm. I will check in the morning. 900ssie/1000ssie/Monster S4 five spokers all fit. I've used all of them for my 800ss race bike. Also 3 spoke wheels fit too. Both sets of wheels (3 spoke & 5) fit both the 1000ss/800ss (02/03) style swinging arm and the older steel swinging arm.
IIRC the 900ssie chassis uses an underslung rear caliper - this may have some effect upon wheel choices, but I don't think so. I suspect the wheels I have listed will fit your swinging arm.

I have 3 sets of wheels - if you can get yourself and bike up here you are free to check fitments using mine to ensure you don't make any expensive mistakes!

OK, thanks for the replies everyone. My information about spindle size changes came from the Carozzeria website, where I was looking for aftermarket wheels. On this page, there's a drop down that seems to suggest a spindle size change:

AK - I have one forged all 999R front wheel. If it doesn't fit, I'd be happy to discuss PX. What type of wheel is your carbon on?

Twpd - Thanks for the offer. I've already made some expensive mistakes with these 999 wheels and I honestly don't think I'll have time to get the bike to you before racing (March 28-29)

Phil thats the front wheel spindle sizes, forks with the 40mm mounts would come with 17mm or later 20mm spindles, the Forks from about 1999 onwards with the 65mm caliper spacing came with the 25mm spindle as found in 748/916/996s etc

Hmmm, if you look at the drop down it shows:
20mm Front / 17mm Rear (94-99)
25mm Front / 17mm Rear (00-01)
25mm Front / 25mm Rear (02+)
That seems to indicate to me a change on the rear size too.

Certainly applies to the Monster range as they went to a 25mm rear spindle in 2002
