Could someone clarify this for me, with the 996R when you want to change over the pipes to the 50mm carbon ones, is it the ECU which you change or a chip? Im of the opinion that its the ECU.

Yep on the 996R its the 5.9M ECU that needs to be changed or possibly just fit a Power commander 3 if its just the cans that have been changed

Any testeretta based engine requires a full ECU from what I gather, not just a chip, but as had been said in a previous thread, it would be cheaper to buy a powercommander and use that than buy the Ducati ECU

I believe that the UK 996R's came with 2 ECU's to match each set of pipes.

The one i've just bought has a second ECU for the road legal pipes so hopefully the one you buy should have as well.

The 996r came with two ecu a road can and "race" cans (50mm carbon termis.)

You also got a cover and stand!

With open pipes I would describe the "race" ecu as a good starting point. I would suggest using a Power commander aswell, with a dyno run!

Interesting Andy, did the power commander make a big difference? all the way through the range or just at the top end?

reason for asking about the ECU was that i have been emailing a guy selling a 996R which hasnt got the carbon 50mm termis, he is under the impression that he just needs to supply the cans and a CHIP, not the ECU. I have told him he is not correct. You guys have confirmed this.
