Haven't seen too many 998R's around, those that I have seen were about £12,000 - £12,500. There seem to be a few more 996R's about... I paid £10,500 for mine (6,000 miles, FSH 1 Year Factory warranty plus belt service). There has been one privately advertised in the Kent area for about £8,500...I reckon that's probably the starting point...I think it might still be in MCN...worth a look. If its half decent, that's a good price.

Instead of the tradition of the newbie buying the drinks, name your drink mate and i'll line them up. A Yorkshireman with taste.

Power wise the standard 998 is 123bhp

The 998S (same engine in the Bostrum & Bayliss reps, main differences on the reps are the Ohlins forks and paintwork, over the 998S) knocks out 136 bhp.

The 996R (also has a 998 engine) knocks out 135bhp

The 998R has a shorter stroke 999cc engine and produces 139bhp.

easy way to recognise the 996R 998S/R motor over the standard 998 engine is sandcast crankcases and deep sump motor, just in case a seller tells a few porkies.

998R!!!

Everyday!!!

I was riding mine last night after leaving Brands heading down into Kent. What a machine, so much better in all departments than my 996, which is still a great bike that I have no complaints with but the 998R is sublime.

The 998R is actually 999cc. It is the same bore and stroke as the current 999R engine. Sandcast crankcases and deep sump as BDG mentions above.

You can't go wrong with one of these.

Oh yeah, price-wise depends on condition but you'll be looking at 10,500 through to 13,000 but it's a buyers market at the moment.

You sure you don't want a 996?

A 998R - nah - they made too many!!!! You want the 996R.

Ducati tried to cash in on the popularity of the hand-built, limited edition 996R, by producing a not-so limited run of 998Rs.

They just used the 998R to test some of the components of the new 999 engines before they squeezed them into the 999

Go for the 996R - you and she will be much more appreciative.

I cant say out ive got a 748 but if i did sell it it would be for a 998r. or id just buy the lump if i could and fit it
