996sps vs ST4s Dyno Runs

The Dyno never lies!

First impressions of the 996sps (2000 model) were WOW, this thing is a lot quicker, and more powerful than the st4s.

Out of curiosity as the st4s had been on the dyno before and after fitting the pipes i thought i would try the sps.

Ducati qoute 117bhp for the st4s and 123bhp for the sps but seat of the fat arse said the sps felt like it had a lot more especially from 6000 rpm.

Both bikes were run on the same dyno (although 2 years apart).Dyno operator said the runs would still be comparative.

Dyno operator did comparative print outs in STD horsepower because it is the highest, whereas EEC readings which most magazines use are approx. 2 or 3% less i believe.

The sps trails behind the humble st4s power wise upto 9000rpm before overtaking and climbs to a lofty peak of 119 bhp against 117 bhp for the st4s.

Torque never beats the st4s anywhere and is about 2 ftlbs down at peak.

Initial reactions were 'this is not what i expected' until i rode them back to back again and boy does the sps feel miles better than the st4s. Revs far quicker and still seems to pull harder and for longer. Must be the 20 kilos less weight, titanium rods, different injectors etc that give it such a better feel that puts such a smile on my face.

Moral of the story..can't argue with the dyno, but the dyno doesn't tell you how the bike feels.

Maybe i've got a particularly good st4s against an average sps? Don't think so because it pulls like a train and seems so much more responsive, even low down much to my surprise.

Any of you more knowledgable folks tell me why my seat of the pants disagrees with the dyno?

Now would the ST4S compare so favourably to the SPS dyno run because it's for sale?

Only kidding, if I had any spare dosh I would be highly tempted by your 4S.

Apart from the 20 Kg extra weight of the 4S, what about the SPS flywheel? Isn't that lighter, making the SPS spin up faster and feel more lively. Also, what gearing have they both got? ST's are notoriously overgeared, might need another cog or two at the back to approximate the SPS thrust

Jools

You cynic!!!

First thing i did with the st4s was throw the 15 tooth sprocket as far as i could and replace with 14 tooth because as you so rightly say its overgeared as standard.

My 888 Strada has a 996 ST4s engine, 116Bhp at the back tyre, and a great torque curve.

Big grins every time we go out to play.

Regards,

Rob
