900 SS/Sl Problems

My mate has a 95 'M' 900 Supersport, he has just experienced probs with the engine.
1. Whilst riding it he felt as if it was seizing up, when he got it home, he found the alternator had split and was rubbing on to the engine case, the more he reved the more the problem occured.
2. The clutch was rattling like a good un, he has changed both for stock items and now finds the bike runs better than he has ever known in two years.
Q: Has anyone else experienced these problems?

Total cost in the region of £500.00 Can we prevent these problems by annual inspection or sooner?

And while on the subject of problems, we seem to hear lots about the 4 valve bikes but not the 2 valve ones. eg chrome flaking on rockers etc.
Are there problems which are common to the 2 valve engines/bikes or have they been around that long that all problems are well sorted?

Never had any problems with mine (yet) or my Pantah or Darmah.

Had a 600 Pantah with alternator problem. It seemed to stem from the fact that the internal of the alternator cover still had some of the rough casting on it and it cut through the outermost alternator winding, albeit only after about 10 months and whilst I was on Bol D'Or trip.
Has your mate checked the inside of the casing to see if same?

Oh yes. 5 years ago my brother had a 600ss, the alternator rotor had split clean through, . it nearly spat him off when the engine locked up while exiting a roundabout, at first i thought the engine had siezed, when i eventually got the alternator cover off we found the rotor had split and jamed itself to the stator. i think it was about £125 for the parts to get it sorted,

Gordy.
