Hi I am moving up to a bigger bike for touring and I am looking at the Ducati ST3/4 ,Multistrada or Triumph Sprint ST. I would be interested in any input from more experienced guys regarding these choices. Cheers Dave
I've owned an early Triumph Sprint ST, only did 4500 miles and sold it for a Ducati ST4, which i then sold for an ST4S, miles, miles better than the Triumph, despite what some of the pres say.
I also owned a Multistrada, great bike but depends what you want.
Honest opinion if i could only have 1 bike out of all of those it would be the ST4s.
ST has more sporting pretentions than the Multi. Didn't like the seating position on the ST3 I tried out as it was quite a stretch to the bars and, after the 998, my back now prefers the slight lean forward/upright style of the Multi. It's much more at home commuting and on twisty roads, not bad on high speed motorways etc but you can change the screen to help that.
Agree with Paul in the main, however I think the Multi has the more sporting ability, I have had 916,996, 999, ST2 & ST4S and wouldn't swap the Multi for any of them, but............... you have to give it time to get used to it because it is TOTALLY different to the others. Does everything it says on the tin. as Paul says get a Multi.
Unless you want to cruise 2 up at over 100 in which case get an ST3/4/4S-the Multistrada is a belting bike but for long distance the ST beats it-oh, and round a track as well.
I've had 2 multis but never owned an ST. I went for the multi cos it was more upright, wider barred and with its long travel suspension better on bumpy roads and tighter twisty B roads, when touring I tend to use more A/B roads than fast motorways so it was preferable to have this rather than high speed performance. if you ride in the cold or winter you can add hand guards and heated grips useful if you are heading to the Alps early or late season as well. Later models (05 on) have the higher screen and more comfy seat, both are worth having.
