Strada Gearing ???

On the way home from Cadwell after the marvellous A15 had been and gone and I was onto the long boring schlep back down the A1, I got to thinking about gearing, cos it's standard at the moment.

There's a section of the A1 that is, in fact, a private test track - honest officer! I was doing about 100 at 5000 rpm in top gear but at those revs the engine is still out of it's power band and 'bogs' a little if you wind it open, you have to change down a cog (or two) to get some serious urge.

In fact the gearing is part of the reason why I think I'm going around everywhere one gear too high - my ST has a 14 tooth front sprocket and is doing just over 6.5K rpm at 100 (although since I've got the T8 the ST is going to get it's 15 tooth sprocket and it's panniers back). In comparison the 888 feels like it's just loping along when in fact it has a more rev hungry engine than the ST and might suit lower overall gearing.

What's the consensus on changing the gearing on the 888?

I'm running 15/42 with a 996 lump, let it rev and really feel it , fly. Compare that with your ST gearing to see where I am. I did it cos I don't need 165mph on the road. Well, not every day

Mine's running 15/39 too, for curvy rides ... in Belgium !!!

From time to time, I have to visit friends Ducati fans, located about 130 kms from home. Roads have perfect asphalt but are very very ... straight. I agree that's not fun, but I enjoy this travel. In such a situation, I change the gearing 15/36 ---> 120 kph at 4000 tr/mn. Thus, the engine rev. in association with Termi sounds and tows like a railway engine ... means pretty bewitching .......

Don't laugh at me, life is a test ... 888 spirit too !!!

gearing

Just changed to 14/37 does give it a bit more pep and more usefull in 30mph limits as you can use 2nd gear rather than reving high in 1st.
