Diagnostic tech

To the tech bloke amongst us,

I would like to know more about plug in diagnostic kit and how to use it. I quite fancy being able to turn off service lights or reset TPS etc.

The trouble is although mechanically savvy I have next to no computer skills and this extends to using a smartphone. It seems that more and more bikes these days run on computer chips...

I have seen devices on ebay for as little as a tenner, are they any good or suitable for basic stuff such as code reading/resetting? I understand I would need diagnostoc plug leads etc. Are there any decent, but basic guides for a simpleton like me? I want to learn!!

Cheers Jim

you'll need jpdiag software which does all of the above for you, free of charge it is too
you'll need the cables from ebay and the software is unlocked when you send the author an email...he replies with an unlocking code.
google jpdiag and you'll find the forum

Thanks for the reply. My trouble is using a computer, especially downloading anything as even this text took me an age and was done on a playstation. And I dont do laptops. My question therefore relates to the orange diagnostic boxes on ebay and similar; are these types suitable for the basics? Anyone used these?

I think these are too basic, or not compatible with the Ducati ECUs.
Although you will probably get it to talk to the bike (over OBD - On-Board Diagnostics - the language that most ECUs can talk in) it won't be clever enough to do things like reset the TPS and Service Light, and that kind of thing, because they are too specific to the Ducati.

You do see some old Ducati equipment come up for sale every now and then but they are rare and very expensive - I think Kev (Skidlids) has managed to acquire some over the years!

I tried a new system called MotoFurore as this comes as a complete kit that plugs into a USB port instead of cables and drivers. The box is about £100 and it's much more a "plug and play" system than homebrew JP Diag stuff. You still need something to run it on, but I bought a £50 Windows 8 tablet off ebay (new, from the Argos outlet!) and it works really well. See pic below (running on my test rig!).

The software is not that mature yet but it does talk to the bikes and it may not work with newer stuff (like the Panigale) but it may be worth checking as a cheaper alternative.
