Have just changed my oil (2001 996S).
Went to clean the pickup filter, as per Haynes, and I don't seem to have one.
I just have a blanking plug where it should go.
I assume this is ok?
Unlikely you won’t have one, probably still in there and just come lose. Have another look; if you really don’t have one you should be able to get one from a dealer.

Once you've taken off the cover, you need to poke the allen key down in there again to unscrew the filter. If you shine a torch down in there you should be able to see it.

Thanks guys.
I've put everything back together now but if there is one in there it is very different to the pictures in the Haynes book. To unscrew it I had to use a 14mm Allan key, in the picture they show a protruding "nut" head.

Yes, I found that too, when I changed the oil on my 2001 748 recently.
They changed the design (why?) around that model year.
The actual filter is not dissimilar to the pic in the Haynes book, except it has the female 14mm hex instead of the "bolt-head".
As I said above, it's a "double operation" with the Allen key. Better to use a 14mm socket rather than an actual Allen key, cos they can be quite tight.

Thanks moto748. I'll now know next time.
