I need a hug

a mundane request from a new ish owner I know but ..

I've a 1990 900SS without a hugger/chainguard, no big deal but I believe a chainguard is needed for an MOT. Thought I'd knock one up but to save me lots of hacksawing drilling to create an amateur guard and anyway protecting the shock is no bad thing. Does anyone know where I can get such a thing ? I am pretty sure it is different to the later 91+ model.

Interestingly the last owner had cable-tied some kind of hugger on, however as this rubbed against the tyre I removed it.

You are correct,the '90 SS swingarm/hugger is very differant to the '91 onwards bikes.Dunno where you would get one,those bikes are pretty rare.The 750 Sport of a similar vintage has the same set up.

I've got an original '91 hugger/chainguard that's lying about doin nowt if u want it... the only difference i can think of between the 90 an 91's is that the swingarm is a bit more robust but basically they are the same, as is the configuration....

..my '91 ss passed it's mot with no hugger or chainguard a few months back, and the garage is of good repute... probably one of them 'if it's original equipment..' rules... it's not obvious so I'd doubt if it would be picked up :frog:

Dan,sorry if I've confused things,this is the bike I'm thinking of,the '89/90 900SS.

I know its an SS and not a Sport because I had one and it says so on the side panel.
If I remember,the rear hugger was a rather ugly thing that followed the line of the swingarm on the r/h side then looped over it on the left to form the chain guard.
The '88/89 750 Sport has the same set up.
Is'nt the '91 onwards hugger a two piece item?

Looking at that pic reminds me of when I bought mine back at the end of 1990.I bought it new from Hoss Elm of Moto Cinelli.He did me a good deal on it as the new ('91) model had just been anounced.It was a bit of a shock to the system after the FZR1000 Exup I had before,...........those vibes,........that rock hard suspension,.........that finicky Weber carb!
I loved that bike tho,after two years and 18,000 miles,I swapped her for a '92 851.
It must have made the right impression as Ive only ridden Dukes ever since.:D

The 750 had the 16 inch wheels on it from the Paso and the 900 wore 17 inch ones from an 851 (I think...). The swingarms were also apparently different.

I reckon the best option would probably be to pick up a cheap later hugger from eBay and make that fit. Looking at pictures of a 89/90 swingarm and a later SS one they appear similar.

The 900 may have had a slightly beefed up swingarm,but it was basically all the same shape.

That's my bike, except I've a white frame.

It's my first non-jap bike, I love the raw edge it has, and it is quite compact.

Webers are a pain though it runs rough at 4krpm exactly where it wants to be for most town riding.

Thanks for the tips, think I am going to make a simple guard.

Must try and get out more and meet up with some of you, getting a pass from the wife and kids can be difficult.

..yeah that's the same as my 900ss that have been pilfered (both of em, but with the white frame too)... but I'm pretty certain that my '91 hugger is near enuff the same thing as to make it go on with little or no effort... all things considered the original equipment hugger is crap imho - which is why mine is sittin on the shelf hehe... but if u want it...

some advice about the bike if u want it... watch out for signs of fatigue on the swingarm.. top mount to monoshock... they're notorious for cracking around the welds and both of mine did it... metmachex make a top qual replacement (had that and a deep braced jmc and I'd have the metmachex anyday) - a white power monoshock makes a BIG difference all round... and dont let anyone touch your forks unless they know exactly what they're doing.... and as for the webers, find someone who knows how to set em up right and they're sweet, although that engine doesnt really get going with them on till about 5ish...

..apart from that.. keep all the earth straps nice and clean.. dont ever rev past 9000, and erm... oh aye - have a blast :D :D

It's 101 euros and can be found under "Liste 'Kotflügel vorn/hinten'" in the '87-91 tab (3rd down on the left). The bloke behind Diopa speaks English too I believe so you wouldn't have any problems there.

I do envy you having all those picturesque clear roads (when the weather is OK). Spent most of my childhood in Dundee. Down here I cannot be bothered to go out just for a ride as I spend all my time trying to overtake cars.

As a mean ex Scot (Englinsh by birth), I'll go for the free hugger. The Dioppa stufff does looks nice , I quite fancy the Classic fairing they do for this model.
