Thanks guys, I was beginning to lose heart! My computer has now started to lock up when offline as well. I'm using quite a new virus checker & nothing shows up. I've recently cleaned out a load of crap from the hard drive which has quickened things up, but to be honest the pc is getting on a bit and needs replacing.
Cheers, Illya.

Try these three:

Ad-aware

Spybot search and destroy

Hijack This

Once you have cleaned your machine of all the spyware, run a verus scan, defrag and then run disk cleanup. Then get a firewall and you are ready to roll again.

Defrag in safe mode with only the minimum programmes running the defrag is quicker and more thorough i defrag once a week.

(for those who don't know ) usually safe mode usually is accessed by pressing F8 on boot up
