OK, probably really simple, I've done literally 100's of these, but hit a bit of a problem, so I will set the scene...

Win2K server, Exchange 5.5, IS needs restoring, previously able to restore to NT4 Server, Exchange 5.5 with reg hack, we use NTBACKUP also.

The problem lies with a new server using SDLT drive, and the NT driver doesn't seem to work, so built a Win2k recovery server, and voila the the tape drive works, installed Exch5.5 and come to restore, catalogs OK, but NTBACKUP won't let me change the restore location to the new server, will only let me restore to the original server...

HELP!

Its horrid when you get loads of replies to a very important question and non of them give you any useful information whatsoever!!

I used to know quite a bit about computers but i've lost it completely over the past five years or so. Things have moved on so quickly i'm just so far out of date.

Well it's sorted, restore in progress, but NTBACKUP in 2000 is so un-user friendly, not easy to explain, but unless you click one particular box which doesn't relate to what you're trying to do, you'd never know!

JPM, still need urgently a receptionist in Knutsford, just for one week (well, 4 days now), if you want to slip a skirt on and chill out!
No back ups,
No server manager backups!
No missing data!
Just a nice little switchboard to manage for four days

Oh.... don't want me now then eh? LOL!!

You spent all that time on MS site for that? doesn't include exchange though, plus I'm wasn't doing a restore from the server in question to another location, not sure if I explained well enough, I have the tape from the server in another server for recovery (off-line) but NTBACKUP prompts to overwrite the live data, not restore to the off-line server

Was it a second tab with the option to overwrite or specify a different location? Or was it the hidden button with "Advanced" on it?

As my old headmaster used to say "Every day a day at school".
I have the tape from the server in another server for recovery (off-line) but NTBACKUP prompts to overwrite the live data, not restore to the off-line server doesn't sound like you do things by half does it?

5.5 needs your recovery server to be identical - same name, IP address installation drive, account name, etc. It's a pig!

????

5.5 needs to be identical in OS and Service Pack (Technically not the case you can restore a Win2K server to NT4 with a reg change) doesn't need to be the same name, or IP, what it does need is same Service Pack for Exchange, built into a duplicate org and site, case sensitive also, Exchange also needs to be installed under the same service account or the services won't start.
