A numpty chain question...

Excuse the lack of knowledge...

Im looking to replace the chain on my 749 as Im going up a couple of teeth on the rear and need a slightly longer one.

Will any good quality 525 chain do?

Do I need to worry about the different codes that go after the number? The manual says standard fitment is a DID 525 HV? What does the HV signify?

were talking about the quality of the chain mate. I recon a nice gold DID 525 ERV (as good as it gets) the biz mate with a bigger rear sprocket!

So all 525 chains are essentially the same in respect of physical dimensions?

I know quality will differ, does it matter whether its an O-ring or X-ring chain?

The side plate thickness does vary as you go from regular duty to heavt duty chain, but a duc is heavy duty specced anyway.
The only difference between an o-ring and an x-ring is shape :saint:
The x-ring is better because it gives a pair of sealing surfaces, and hence is better at keeping the original chain grease inside, and is slightly better at keeping cack out ... as long as you keep your chain clean(ish) !
All this adds up to less adjustment required ;)

If you wanted to be trick, go to a gold 520 erv as your buying a rear sprocket just a few more pence for a front aswell.

The 748 runs on a 520.......and so does most race bikes.

It was explained to me as, think about a match stick. try to break it. now cut it in half and try to break it again, itll be harder to achieve.

Did a quick search, and read one of Shazaam's old posts about going from 525 to 520 on a 999, and he didn't recommend it due to the torque and weight of the bike. I know mine is a 749, but it weighs about the same?

Im not bothered about being too trick, 525 will probably do me fine, the extra 2 teeth should provide the change I want :D

i have been warned about did chains by quite a few people

tsubaki is ment to be a much more reliable brand

Yeah, Alan at AJ Racing has confirmed what Shazaam said about needing a longer chain, an extra 2 links and a slight increase in the wheelbase should sort it!

Again i was told you need to look for 500mm between the swingarm pivot and the centre of the wheel, as a guide on length,

If this sounds like a stupid question, it probably is...why 500mm?

Would a slight increase (we're talking a couple of mm) in the wheelbase stabilise things?

Longer wheelbase will make it more stable. 500mm is the reason why the 996/8 boys buy a longer swingarm. The 999 one is indeed longer as std.

I've got a gold Tsubaki chain on my 749 - looks the muts nuts. I bought a 101 link one to accomodate a 41T rear sprocket. Wheelbase is a nadge longer than before.
