How effective are baffles on a 50mm pipe?

Hi, I've been looking for a 916 to purchase for a while and found a couple which happen to have 50mm + termis which are just too loud for me to inflict on my neighbours. I would still love to get one of the bikes but no point if i cant use it without waking up the whole street.

How effective are baffles? I've heard that they can reduce noise by 50% and can be removed for those times that i am away from home.

I'm not keen on drilling into the cans to fit baffles but would rather do that than miss out on a bike I wanted for 18yrs :-)

they do reduce the sound levels, by how much is a depends upon the condition of the end cans and the design of the baffle. A figure of 50% is very hard to define, as a 1dB decrease is barely discernable by the human ear. baffles would normally reduce the sound level output by around 5dB. Seeing as the measurement for a 916 would be at 5000rpm, anthing below this RPM would be quieter too....therefore being realistic, cant you just ride quietley out of your road? :D

My racebike is 102dB without baffles on a 45/50 crossover to 50mm cans.

With baffles it only dropped to 101dB.

As stated these readings are at 5000rpm, just ride out slowly.

Many thanks for the replies - yep I'd be dribbling out onto the road and away but even on low revs I think I'd be waking up a fair few people with an open can.

I might just go for it anyway but would have been nice to have a way to neuter it when leaving early hours. I'll give a couple of firms who make baffles a call and see if anyone of them have any advice.

have you got an open clutch cover? IMO having a closed cover would reduce the neighbour noise much more than baffles if you have

If you're really that worried, why not just push the bike up the road before starting? At least you won't be annoying *your* neighbours! ;)

Yup that's just what I do if it's before 8 otherwise a quick start and off we go on a warm up lap;)

Or maybe rev the nuts of it every morning and force all the neighbours to move :cool:
