This may seem like a stupid question but do you need to remove a link in order to remove the chain?
Going to replace this week and it would appear so....or am i being an idiot?:puzzled:
I'g guess so being a standard swingarm like most other bikes

Yes , nothing to do with the swing arm being double sided though , you have to remove a link to remove the chain on a 916/96/98 etc too , it's because the front sprocket is in front of the swing arm pivot and the rar sprocket is behind it .
I suppose you could remove the chain without splitting it if you remove the swing arm and pivot but a chain splitter is a lot quicker :smug:
Your need to look for the soft link in the chain to split it :cool:
.....and i suggest using an angle grinder just to flat the raised parts of the link before using your splitter to press the link out. ;)

how on earth do i find that? is it marked in some way?
