Anyone any idea how many were produced with plaques and how many without ??

dont think I would buy one without...why make em??:puzzled:
Desmo996r
24-Feb-2005, 15:09
number 277 :D
i think out of the 500 produced, the first 350 had plaques and 150 were without plaques and for racing.......could be wrong tho'
Mine came without a plaque but i have a nice letter from Ducati customer services in Bologna, dated 2001 saying here is your authentic plaque, and its a low number as well.
(could be because the bike was bought at the end of the season and the first owner was a Mr T Bayliss:lol:)
The reason I asked, is that there is one for sale locally, absolutely immaculate but with no plaque :( and that is kind of putting me off.

350 with plaques
150 without
The 150 bikes without plaques were originally reserved for race teams. These 150 bikes had very minor engine differences (something about cylinder head cooling iirc), and as a result were the only true homolagtion bikes for WSB in 2001.
But then, you'd need to be a bit of an anorak to know this :puzzled:
Ian_km - buy it mate, you'll have one of the rarest Ducati's in Britain!
Cheers!
Scott

I'm sure if you contact Ducati Uk or indeed the factory they could verify the validity by the engine and frame numbers.

I bought a non plaqued one. Given the earlier discussion, I have asked Ducati, no reply as yet.
I was told that the first 500 had plaques and then a further 150 were made later because of demand. The one I purchased was first registered in September 01.
Those sold on the net went in March.
The engine number on mine finishes in 507, so perhaps some truth in it. To be honest quite happy there is no plaque and it is definitely and without doubt an R.
Looking at the manual on Duc's website, number 1-150 have a different manual that 151 and above. So perhaps the 150 for racing is correct and those that were not sold to race were sold later in 2001:puzzled:

Mine was registered Sept 2001 as well, engine number 562, but the plaque number is 209:puzzled::puzzled:

Mine is number 11. July 2002 I think you will find that they made over 500. But only numberd with plaques 500 of them

did you get it from Bristol?
Henners I hate to pour cold water on your dreams, But should the lower vents on the side panels be shown has carbon!!!!!!!!!
I have a feeling this one came from bristol, its one i looked at quite a while ago, and the dealer couldnt give me an explanation why the vents were red. Did you get the extras with it including the ecu? He had to get these from Ducati as the bike came from japan and came over without Termis, stand ect.

.. imported from Japan however confirmed by DUK. I'm having her dynoed to prove full power. Spent most of her days in a Geisha house apparently. Isn't there something ironic about a Japanese inport that isn't an IL4 ?
Jon also mentioned the lower fairing vents being painted rather than exposed carbonfibre - check out the pictures from the launch report:

As per Dibble's earlier post, I was fortunate enough to pick up Chris Webb's bike , No 315, and what can I say, drop dead gorgeous doesn't even start to do it justice. I started lusting after Ducatis when the Desmo 250 was getting tested against Honda 250 G5s and the like, and when Dave turned up with his original 916 in 1998, I started putting all my shrapnel in a big fcuk-off bottle. After about 6 years I had about £112, so I went for plan b and remortgaged the house.
The bike will be seen circulating in a sedate and dignified (ie slow) manner during a number of southern-based track days!

To be honest Eric I wanted a 996R. It was the compromise deal with another bike I had ordered with my wife.
But I saw this opportunity with the 998R because I knew about it being sold and even though I wanted a 996R (last one of the shape to win WSB and an Aussie rode it as well) this 998 is very special to me. I had a think about it and my wife was keen as well, highly unusual behaviour, so I went for it.
I'm so happy I could cry, in fact I did cry when I first worked out the deal with the owner. Like I say, this particular bike is VERY special to me and I'm so happy that I am the one who is going to have it and treat it like the previous owner did.
It won't be hidden away, it will go on the track as well as the road. And whilst I'm certain I won't be reckless with it I'd like to think I'm still going to open the throttle on it.
COME ON!!!

I have 2x top clamps and plaques #0247,and#0187, If anybody wants the plaques and the parts to make genuine 996r -s I would be happy to sell the parts including possibly an engine. henners bike looks to have the wrong seat the original seat had the four vents ? henners seat looks like a plastic 998r type (ie apears to be without the carbon highlight around the taillight,I have the factory PLASTIC ,996r seat like new if he wants to keep the bike original;--breakout
My bikes dont count as (996r)s as i have replaced suspension wheels, brakes, levers, master cylinders, footpegs ,airbox ,gastanks, engines exhausts, fuelsystems, throttle bodies, swingarms ,tripleclamps, seats, axles, sprockets, fuelpumps, infact the only 996r parts i used were the frames and some of the bolts.I have almost the entire bikes for sale in little pieces,

So now with 14 996Rs in the DSC, what with the inevitable raced, stolen, lost, totalled ones, etc..., how many do we reckon are left in the UK?
Could we be close to having a third of the UK's 996Rs in the DSC?

Yes the one in Newcastle. Have not told my girlfriend yet as I am trying to think of a plausible reason for me buying it instead of doing one of the bathrooms in the house! I could really do with someone buying my multistrada even though I have not advertised it. That way I could invent a straight swap scenario?!! "Look Dear its 2 years older than my multistrada, but worth the same so I did a straight swap" Do you think she will fall for it? No me neither. I kind of realise I will have to sell the MS as I cannot really justify having the both of them. Strange really that I bought the MS coz I was struggling with my size on my 996s and did not miss it at all at first but eventually started hankering after the pain of a 996 again.
I know the MS really is the better bike for my uses at the moment, but nothing is for ever and I could always change back! I have not bothered putting it up for sale as I noticed you had mentioned selling yours and then someone else posted theirs for sale. I know its only a few weeks ago at Raid the Lakes that I said to you how I loved the MS and would be keeping it! but a 996r was very high on my list of must haves before I'm too old.
I am not too bothered about the investment side of things but its kind of nice to realise that I could probably got my money back in the future as its only got 2500 miles on it and I got it for a reasonable price. I could have spent the same kind of money on a k5 or r1 and eventually take quite a big hit come trade in time?
Just scared of what the missus is going to say! Though I am selling my XJR (Jaguar not Yamaha!) to buy her something she can drive the 2 critters around in and the shopping etc while I run around in my 5 year old van so she cant say too much! Still scared though as she does not get bikes at all.

I feel a France trip coming on! Now where did I put those Helibars? Oh yes I just sold them!! :(
Hartside? I dont know if the extra 50 bhp on the 996 will help up there! I will have again to get used to not being able to see over the walls and into the dips etc, Scary!
I am partly blaming Lily for my renewed interest in the 996 because of 2 incidents at Raid the Lakes. One being when I was pottering along that road just after the petrol stop there I was wondering where everyone was and if I had gone on the correct road then I heard what I first assumed to be a Lancaster bomber she came past at a speed of about 80mph quicker than I was doing and made me jump, Lovely! The second was a few hours later following her and Gizmo up to Hartside and listening to those termis. Its funny how such little things have such a big effect. Thanks Lily.
I will be putting some miles on the R as soon as I get my hands on it! Cant wait. :D

Come on Henners sort the list out!
i porter what else did you have done to the suspension? Got back from Portugal on Friday went straight into my garage to check on the bikes and there is a nice little puddle of fork oil under one side of the forks! Am thinking of having the bike set up a little better for my weight and have used Maxton in the past, Whats your thoughts on Kais?

Hi, sorry for delay.been out the country. Just had stiffer spring fitted and set up for my weight 14st with leathers etc, quick road rides and the odd track day
Sag now down to about 10- 15mm. Is now a firmer ride. Still getting used to it. Im pants at giving feed back. Wont know till ive gone out with the lads for a good blast.
The lads at KAIS seemed to know what they were talking about though. Cost £85 for Ohlins 68 spring and set up and all the coffee you can drink.
