My original clip-ons are going rusty so I brought a pair of Italian RobbyMoto Alu clip-ons from ExtremeByke Sportz at Ally Pally – these are the raised type (but a bit lower than the originals).

Tried to fit them today and had a few probs. Managed to get everything off (in the end – seized switch screws caused a bit of cursing).

Biggest prob is the brake master cylinder. F I slide the cylinder up the bars to the end closest to the ignition switch (where it was originally) it hits the raised part of the bar. This mean I have to move it out a couple of inches. It all works OK but doesn’t look so good.

Any suggestions?

Best, but not the cheapest, answer would be to fit a master cylinder with a remote reservoir from a later bike.

Yes, I was thinking that. I was wondering about changing to a different brake/clutch set-up - I heard Kawasaki parts were an easy option. I can also get adjustable levers, then. Any suggestions?

I had exactly the same problem t'other day with my clutch cylinder and some Harris clipons. By far the easiest solution was to chamfer the edges of both the clipon and the master cylinder. Still isn't perfect but it's miles better. The m/cyl base has a surprisingly think wall (although you obviously wouldn't want to find out how thick!)

Otherwise you'd be looking at a s/h m/cyl off a 916 or similar. Anything with a remote resevoir should do the trick.

Cheers,

Ali

Any master cylinder that fits should be fine. Just make sure that the piston diameter is the same or you will change the length of stroke/required lever pressure. Sometimes this can be to your advantage. Make sure that it is one with a mechanical switch for the brake light so that you can just wire it in.

I bought a 916 brake master cylinder off ebay, complete with resevoir, lever and even braided brake lines on it, for £52.

As the brake lines were no good for me (it's for the DesmoDue bike and they split below the bottom yoke, so are not ACU approved, and I already have twin lines for it) I punted the lines back on ebay.

Ended up getting £34.95 for the brake lines, so in total the brake master cylinder cost me £17.

Bargain :D

I'm happy with the ZX7R Master cylinder mod I fitted....

That's just what I was looking for. Did you do both sides (clutch and brake)? Was it a straightforward fit?

I had to juggle the throttle and switchgear around quite a bit but I didnt find it too bad really.

I didnt do the clutch side as it has a braided hose as well but, an uprated slave cylinder would be nice for town riding.
