View Full Version : Got your big bore kit? - check its the right one?

Just a quick message - did you get your big bore kit today?

If so, have you checked it fits your bike/engine?

I got mine sent for my 2001 M600 - and its the wrong kit, the kit is for a pre 1998 engine, so wont fit at all:o

Check the part number if you have an engine from 1998 onwards - you need kit number: DU96401698C

If you have the DU96401697C that is for the earlier engine.

The easy check is the early kit has black barrels & no O rings, and the later kit has siver barrels & O rings - and pistons are different too, as is the base gasket.

Looks like I'll be on the phone to JHP in the morning:( - I did wonder when the o rings didnt turn up with the kit, as they are shown in the catalogue.

we just think they've sent the wrong one by mistake - Al was just worried somebody else had his one - and would find a similar problem when they couldnt fit it!

He is going to be on the phone this morning.....

Bradders, you have U2U, but it will have to go back mate:)

well, the latest info is:

There are NO kits for the later engines!!!:o

so, I am on the phone to Peter at D/UK to try to get help.....

otherwise, it looks like we will either:

have to run at a disadvantage to the other bikes:(

or

withdraw from the comp...:(

or

has anyone got an early engine?

mind you, having stripped this one down, and having got various work under way - replacing rockers etc, this is going to be a very expensive exercise!:o

according to DP catalogue part number DU96401897C should fit bikes up to 97
there are no Orings and the barrels are black

spare piston number DU964120AAA
spare piston rings number is DU964031AAA

no help to CK+AK but will put a few minds at rest

Well it seems some confusion reigns over the original chassis number over at Ducati and it now transpires that my bike is indeed a 98 on a 99 plate - thats better. I knew full well it wasn't the early engine.
Tomorrow is another day so we'll have to wait and see what happens.
Other than that i'll be running a 583 and be done with it :o

Don't be put off by this Charlotte - with a decent/light rider and good suspension you'll very likely be competitive.

AK

well - as there are 3 board users so far who havent got the right kits (that cant be adapted in any fashion) - Phoenix & Max (Lin), Domski (via Rich @ Louigi Moto) & AK - without knowing any others who dont use the board, perhaps some way round can be found?:puzzled:

Lin - Al didnt give the frame/engine no - just ordered the later one for his 2001 bike - and now JHP are trying their best to find some, but no luck in the UK & Italy yet.... as you say "tomorrow is another day":)

update from the nice & very helpful Dave at JHP:

these kits for later bikes were never offered as part of the deal,
had they been, they would not have been at the price quoted
however, there are none available

so - Chris, Michael - any ideas on how the 3 can still remain competitive?:puzzled:

Oh dear - I feel bad for you guys :(

ali
04-Mar-2005, 15:56
That's bleedin awful.... :(

I remember various discussions, before the BB kit price was announced, considering the option of custom pistons, boring the barrels and nicasil plating. Last chat we had with Chris Bushell we worked out a price of about £350 (£100/piston, £60/barrel boring & coating, £30 for gudgeon pins etc)

Don't know if that's realistic as I haven't done it for years, but might be worth a try talking to those that can be more accurate.

Good luck and keep us informed. Use of 900 engines is not an option!! :frog:

Cheers,

Ali

trouble is, Al feels awful at the moment, cos he did keep mentioning the 2 different kits:(, as soon as he got the bike, & then before & during the AGM:(

Ali, am not sure if we can afford to go this route at the mo, tho it was being discussed by several calls between mech bods last night.

The pot is almost empty at present, as all bits had been collated, and are just awaiting assembly.

Waiting for rabbits out of hats?:)

Folks,

An e-mail is going out to all entrants explaining the way out of this problem, tonight.

There is it would appear a way forward, subject to AK doing some measurements for me.

:eureka::eureka::eureka::eureka:

I have just spoken to Rich Lewellin (Louigi Moto) as we have the same problem as a few of you with a 99 engine (I think).

Rich can bore the stock barrels out and get the nicosil plated so you can then use your big bore pistons from your kits, that's one way around the problem.

Price will depend on how many of you go down this route (assuming it's OK in the rules)

Drop Rich a call on 01761 453366 or 07775 557797 he's waiting for your calls

Hope that helps

Wouldnt it have been so much easier and cheaper to restrict the 620's so they make the same power as the 583's (at least for the first couple of years)????

As I am about to take the original engine out of my 1996 600SS to replace it with a standard 600 monster engine and my intention was to consider fitting a big bore kit to what will be my spare motor for use in the future (maybe next year), I was wondering if anybody wanted to do an exchange.

Bear in mind that when I got my bike I found the front piston was around the wrong way and this may apply to the rear one as well and it also had a few oil leaks but it is a runner.

Upto you it may help somebody out.

Boys & Girls

I am now waiting on a phone call from Ducati in the morning to confirm one last piece of information, but it looks as if we have the problem licked now.

So fingers crossed all will be well again tomorrow.

Ok folks, time to uncross the fingers, we have a solution and it is not going to cost an arm and a leg!

I will put out an e-mail to all entrants in the next 10 minutes advising what needs to be done and the costs.

Please get back in touch ASAP so that we can get it all done as one batch.

I'm afraid he was born that way.

Doctors tried, but failed, to surgically remove the Muppet from him. Senior gene researchers are hoping to use retroactive gene therapy on his kids in the hope that this awful, and hugely embarassing, affliction won't ruin their lives too.....
