View Full Version : MG ZT-T , any views or thoughts , any own one...
I seem to be having one catastrophy after another at the moment.
Don't ask me how, but I managed to park my pretty decent V6 2.6 SRI Vectra estate in a ford, and yes, totally wrecked the engine in a second, also filled the car with 6" of stream water.
Insurance company have totalled it, but will get about 7k settlement.
Now, having eliminated most low end estate cars that look abit bland, I am really interested in a MG ZT-T 190+ ESTATE.
They seem to have a good performance bracket and decent looks for an estate.
Has any body had one or tried one, or better still got one at present.
What sort of probs do they suffer from, and general running cost, reliability etc.
any views or input would be gratefully acepted, need to get a new car sorted pretty darn quick.:(:(
MG ZT's look to be a good package, or am I mistaken.
Might have to consider an amphibious vehicle the way things are going.

Had a saloon Rover/MG as a company car about 3 / 4 years ago - spent more time in the garage than with me. Lots of annoying bits and lots of electrics playing up.
build quality etc wasn't great either.

a very good mate of mine has one he loves the performance but is on his third gearbox:( all replaced under warrenty and only done 6000 miles- he does rag it a bit tho-- it is up for sale at the moment if the one you are looking at is in southampton -dont go near it-- for 7k an audi a4 estate might be a better bet as far as reliability is concerned

Go like stink, driven a hatch a while ago. Can be megga bucks when go wrong, but hey, we're all Ducati owners, we're used to that already!
just so i know,what bits go wrong.
are we talking serious engine failures etc or lesser probs.
Dave W is a bit of a guru with cars, worth a U2U..

get a new one, mega spec, mega deals (push the dealer), dont break down much (not absolutely sure about warranty problems but I think I would see most if an issue)....in summary shed loads of car for little money...bad press, bit old fashion but MG touches arent bad..and its british (JUST!!)

if youre looking new and want something reasonable size, Octavia great car! get past teh badge (if you can) and youre driving cheap VW/Audi technology with higher spec....superb luxury but bit thirsty.....oh and all models fairly reliable.

and the difference between ford and rover is...??? At least with the MG people think its yours and not paid for by some company;)
Mate of mine had the smaller Z MG and had two gearboxes before he handed it back to the lease company (company car for well known software company) after the gearbox locked all the wheels up and spun him around on the M4 on the way to work in the morning!
They argued about it unti lhe told them what went wrong, then they just took the keys back and apologised!

ST220 every time. Not as quick as it could be,but cracking engine, good spec, good handling. Mine's done 60K in 2 yrs and has a 100% reliability record.
Downsides are HUGE depriciation and a little thirsty.

A couple of guys at work have had them as compnay cars...and theyve had there fair share of problems too unfortunatley. Sad really..whats happened to MGR..especially after BMW stitched them up by flogging them and keeping the mini...:mad:
On the subject of cars..im opting out of the company car scheme and im looking for a CLK200 or 270 diesel...my company cars meant to be going back on the 23rd and ive done bugger all about finding my own motor yet !!
So..if anyone sees one of the above in there local press..let me know !!

PCP is the quickest way to get a decent car when you opt out. I did it three years ago.

Im looking for a car about a year old jools and was planning to take out a low rate loan...reason being the old man retires in 2 years and he wants it after me !!
Theres so many finance options..it does my head in !! Hows it working out for you anyway ? Must admit im a bit nervous !

What have Chevrolet (UK) and MG got in common?
Simple they are both just other cars rebadged (Daewoo and Rover). OK so the MG may have a few extras like locking gearboxes but still my grandads Rover.
Nat have you looked at Sainsburys car scheme? Looked pretty good. They match the what car target price and you effectively lease with option at end to hand back or purchase.

Had a company car for nearly twenty years and felt a little nervous going back into doing it all myself. Once I took the plunge though, I never really noticed the difference.
My plan was to spend every penny of my cash alternative on the car so that it didn't start to become part of my salary. Went on a PCP for three years which included a full maintenance contract for tyres, batteries, exhausts, tax etc... then bought the car outright at the end of that three years on a standard bank loan (reasonably low interest).
The way I look at it, when you have a company car it just gets sent back every two or three years and you have nothing to show for it. Once opted out, the car I've got will be bought and paid for after 6 years. I'm quite fortunate though, I opted out aroiund the same time that I got a European role so all my business mileage was a trip to the airport, park the car for a week then drive it back home. I've now got a World wide role which I only need the internet, email and phone with the occasional trip to San Francisco.
As a result, I've got a 4 year old Volvo C70 Convertible which is just going for it's 30,000 service and MOT next week. It still looks and drives like a new car.
Volvo's in general and convertibles in particular seem to have really low depreciation and, because I don't do many miles in it, the residual value is quite high. So at the end of my six years I will own the car outright and it will still be worth 8-10K. Basically, the company will have bought it for me and taken the depreciation hit. I could sell it at that point and put a hefty deposit down on another one, or just keep it. It's not the sort of car that I get tired of driving and it's still quite stylish. I've also got a theory that new cars look cool, then when they're 10 years old they look dated, then when they're 20 years old they look cool again. So who knows I may just keep it forever.
It's a top-down cruiser type of car, not a performance car, but I've got a bike for that, and in a couple of years time when the car is paid for I'll be looking to spend my company car allowance on something around the £15-20K mark....Hmmmmm....wasn't their some rumour about the cooking version of the Desmosedici coming out in 2007?
It's not looking so good for the MG's then:o:o:o.
Why are estate cars so boring and bland looking, come to think of it, that aplies to 99% of cars anyway.

Red, I know the mpg would not be good but how about a Subaru Impreza GX wagon? That is what I am about to buy. Fairly good performance, 2l engine. Or the turbo where you get gallons to the mile?

had a test drive in an 04 Merc E320CDI Avantgarde Estate this afternoon. What can I say, nice , really nice:cool::cool::cool:.
Only one small problem, 20k more than I am looking to spend on a wife and woofer wagon.:o:o:o
Those ZT's are looking very nice again, I think a test drive is needed to get a full picture.

I've had a Rover 620turbo, it leaked oil all over everywhere it stopped and the gearbox was about to give up when I got rid. My dad had a 75 (2.5 v6 but not MG version) which spent quite abit of time at the dealers too. Now have a Skoda Octavia vRS estate which is a fab car 180bhp as standard loads of room and its a VW underneath, supprises a few Scooby drivers too :lol:
Spend £500 at Revo, Jabba Sport or APR and you will have 220bhp to play with :devil:
Cracking car and great value for money but I'm bias.
