Ok can anybody tell me how to tell the difference between the P8 and P7 ECU ?? I need to check which ECU is fitted coz if it's a P7 I'll be chasing after a P8.
cheers
Neil
What's the number on the sticker, or stamped on the mounting lug?
Alternatively, if you're feeling adventurous, whip the lid off and find the clock chip - if its 4.000Mhz it's a P7, if its 8.000Mhz its a P8.
Hope that this helps

the number on the sticker is:
WU43.07/20A.20
99.99% sure that's a P7 as its almost identical to the number of the ecu on my 851, which has an FIM chip, open airbox and a 50mm full system on it.

My 916 (that has a P8) has an under-seat sticker that reads: Engine Family: SCG.92P8GARA

so does anybody know if the 916 P8 ecu is compatable with the 851 ?
I've been told that it's a straight swap but I'm not sure if the unit from a 916 is the same size etc ??
Can't you tell I'm new to Dukes !!!

Well the P7 is your basic FI computer, with the P8 you can get rear cylinder correction.
I have a P8 on my 1990 851 Strada and what a differance it made. Smoother power over entire rev range, better idle. This is possibly due to map for 888 that I had made as a starting map is closer to bikes actual needs. My P8 came from a 1998 Laverda 668 Ghost that I parted out, and was a straight bolt in.
If youd like I can get some pics tomorrow of the side by side of them.

I think you can swap them but you'll need a P8 chip for your bike. They come up on E-bay but I'd get one from JHP so you know exactly what you've got.

Note on P7 vs P8 ECU's:
All 851's and 888's up to serial #'s 000508 have P7 ECU's.
888's from # 000509 onwards have P8 ECU's.
