View Full Version : dumb DD race prep questions from non ducati man
well chaps i have completed all the paperwork , got the bike , all i need know is a bit of help from you old sages and i should be out to play next year,
the bike i have purchased is a monster which has a bikini fairing and belly pan , what do i need to fit a full fairing as i prefer that look ,
the bike is an ex DD race bike which raced last year at cadwell. do i need to do any winter maint on the bike besides oil and filter, ie drain tank and carbs , belts, etc , the bike is kept in a warm dry place so the winter will not harm my new toy, sorry for the dumb questions , cheers in advance

Well you will need a full fairing to start with, then just fashion brackets to secure it. I only use a Bikini fairing, easy fix when it goes down the road or off it completely.
As its been raced you will want to treat it to some decent oil and filter. Belts are not overly dear on the 583 so put a pair on. Just have a good check around as if something can fall off it certainly will. So cable tie multi-plugs together after making sure terminals are clean and silicone greased.
Just obvious house keeping really. Good luck with it. :)

Make sure things that should be tight are tight and things that are supposed to come undone do so.
All the stuff Ghost said but remember not fully synthetic oil.
Book a TD in Feb.

Why not fully synthetic?
Fully synthetic ok on a 583, but not a 620 as the clutch will slip till it gets hot.

There's been a lot said about about clutches slipping when synthetics are used, that is typically caused by using oils with friction modifiers in them, a good quality synthetic designed for use in a motorcycle engine is unlikely to have friction modifier added so the clutch should not slip.

When DD first started, many years ago, we were all given sponsorship packs from Shell which included their fully synthetic oil.
I think just about everyone had problems with clutch slip using that, but once we switched to the semi-synth it was resolved.
The fully synth didn't go to waste - it went in my 748 instead ;)

I used shell fully synthetic in 2011 and at the end of the year my rebuild cost loads, all the bearings were burned, the engine was pretty much fcuked, I was told that the oil was to blame, not up to racing, and to use putolin 15/50 semi-synthetic.

I'm sure motogp bikes will be on fully synthetic same as every F1 car, still they don't have to cope with 53 bhp.

I'm sure that MotoGP teams don't buy their oil off ebay either!

Are you sure it's Fully Synthetic, only Advance comes in both fully and semi, with exactly the same packaging and tiny writing showing the difference!

Appreciate the info, I've been running Castrol Power 1 fully synthetic all season with no issues but have not pulled engine apart to see how she looks although if I did, as I don't know what she looked like before I couldn't say conclusively whether or not it was due to oil.
I have always run my track bikes on Castrol fully synthetic because synthetic base stocks cope with higher temps better than mineral base stocks which you will find in semi synthetics. Never had any issues clutch slip, wear or anything else so was interested in the original comment of don't use fully synthetic.

I use the stuff I found in my mates garage, light brown gooey stuff with the picture of bees on the front. My filter is dead clean an the exhaust fumes smell lovely.

10:40 or 20:50?
Neither of them for me Steve
If I have to buy my oil I use Silkolene 15W50 in my Ducatis
Used Silkolene Pro 4 in my CBR600 and CBR900 race bikes then switched to comp 4 for the TL and 916 in Sound of Thunder, never had a probelm with any of the engines
When Shell Sponsored us with oil I used their 10W40 fully synth, which was fine in the 583 but when I used it in the 620 I found it made the clutch slip, so I ended up beefing up the clutch and switching to Silkolene Semi Synth.
As for Rock Oil 10 years ago I was advised not to use it in my Ducati engines, so I haven't
After my Donny blow up I've switched to Motul300v 15/50, its fkin expensive but it coats and clings really well. No clutch slip whatsoever either. :)
