I have XP home and want to upgrade to XP Pro - do I just chyck the disc in and follow instructions?

Cant seem to find a way to back up (other than copy files to a cd) like ME used to, so what if it all goes wrong? WIll I lose my drivers?

You shouldn't lose any device drivers Paul as it's 'Plug and Pray' :D

Let me check the upgrade paths as I'm not sure this is a vaild upgrade path and therefore may overwrite your application installs.

Back in a mo ...

It's a real nerd-fest in here this morning!

Why do you want to go to pro? the differences are minimal, the main one being you can add pro to a domain, home you cannot

That's a good question - what are you up to Paul?

BTW - it is a valid upgrade path so you should get an option to upgrade when you boot off the XP Pro CD. They are usually fairly intuitive install wizards so I don't really remember what goes on, I just read it the questions and toss a coin.

:D

Well, I don't know the definitive list of benefits. I know it gives you more flexibility with networking but you don't need those. Memory management?

Not sure, let me go back to technet ...

I would say though, that you are inviting a potential risk of losing stuff for not a lot of gain in my view. Unless you can mitigate that risk (backups? move stuff to anther drive etc?) then I would have to want one of the new features to do it.

Let me look up this list.

I'm with Tony on this, if it isn't broke don't touch it, I would think you would/could introduce more problems by doing this. Obviously I/we would recommend backing your machine up before you proceeded, and if you're going to do that you might as well get a nice clean install on board from the off

Here is a Microsoft guide to the differences, ignore the salesy stuff they include though.

Differences (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.mspx)

From this list key ones that may impact a home user would be:

Multi-processor support (could you see yourself running dual processors in your home machine? Some high-end gamers do ....)

Security - do you have your own network at home with other PC's in which you share files/folders between them? If you do their are other administrative benefits that could apply such as roaming profiles/GPO's etc - but you need a domain to leverage these.

Multi-lingual UI pack - do you have people using this PC that are multi-lingual who would want this feature?

In short, unless you need anything on that list I'd leave it how it is.

:D
