2001 748S Alarm and Immobiliser removed.

Bike does not start off the button!! I turn the igition on, get the fuel pump whirr, but nothing when I press the start button. Also indicator no longer work :o

Thought it may be a fuse, but checked them all. Bike will bump off, but getting a bit sick of bump starting her all the time.

Anyone else had a similar experience or able to shed some light on it?

Thanks in advance,

can you hear a clicking sound when you press the button?

Have you checked the starter relay connections had the leads disconnect themselves twice in 12 months.

Forgot to mention that my local ducati dealer didn't fix the problem an RAC mechanic that took part in the pro thunder series said its a common fault.

As Nigel discovered, a common problem with superbikes is that after running fine and then shut off, it won't start again, say after a refueling stop. Sometimes if you wait a few minutes it will restart normally.

The culprit is the two-wire plastic connector plug located behind the starter relay (the round gold component near the battery.) The connector often makes a poor connection from distortion or corrosion. Usually jiggling or unplugging and plugging the connector will get you going again.

And once you plug it back in, get a cable tie wrapped around it:rodent:

Stuck outside Mulsanne ( could have been worse I suppose! ) for 20 minutes till I fathomed it out........

It could be you have missed a link out of the wiring loom. The alarm/imobiliser is just a series of contacts that interupt the supply to components such as the starter button and fuel pump.My guess is that there are some poor connections somewhere.

Thanks for your comments.

I will check the connections around the relay area and clean them up.

DJ - there is no clicking like in a flat battery, just nothing at all.

It seems to be an intermittent fault that has come and gone - usally only a couple of minutes each time, but now has stayed for over a week. Does sound like a connection problem.

I will report back

Mark,

Might be also worth checking the starter button housing itself. Does get water/crap in there and may not be connecting properly...a long shot after trying the other suggestions.

Nelly is a registered alarm man for Datatool so quiz him if no joy with other options but must agree that removing the cut out from the starter solenoid got mine going again last year.
You need to remove the cut out from the solenoid and remove the alarm loom connection then plug the original plug back into the solenoid.
Two minute tops including removing the fairing.
Best of luck dude

Try running a jumper wire from the battery to the starter relay (eliminating the whole loom and switch assembly). Make sure the bike is in neutral and try the jump. It may spark a little but if the starter kicks in then you know it's the loom and or switch.

Make sure you go to the starter relay input connection. Or your jumper will melt in your hands!!

Thanks for all you help, did what you suggested Geo-taff, and she cranked up. Checked all the connections and it was the bl00dy starter relay connections (white plastic 2 wire fella) had come out. Now firmly back in place with a tie wrap.

Suggest everyone spends 5 mins to tie wrap their starter relay connections. As is seems to be a common problem.

Yeah I can confirm that this is usual stuff. I scratched my head a few times over that one as it affected both 916 and 996... well until Nelly the man pointed me to the failing connector!

Careful about the main plug behind the rectifier as well. If it gets loose, battery doesn't recharge, bike runs out of the battery until it is drained ... and that got me stranded at Coppice!! Worth tying up that one too!

My 996 did that from day one...

Since then a cable tie has kept it all intact... Ahhh Italians !
