View Full Version : Lap timer - a nice cheap & simple option?

I'd like to guage how I'm doing/improving during the day on track days, not interested at this stage in times vs lap records etc but it must be a good indicator:

1. Of how I'm progressing during the day
2. How 'dialled-in' I am to consistant laps
Consistancy = smooth = speed

What are the options assuming I have to do it all myself and whilst riding. Is it possible to set up something similar to the 749/999 functionality?

You can get a used lap timer and beacon for around £100

The organisers say you cant use them though. (Timing equipment).
Cheaper option - Nokia phones have a lap timer function. Just ask someone in another group if they will time you for a few laps. (Ideal if you have a mate there either not riding or not in same group as you).

Buy a pedal bike computer. Can do lap times, record max speed, calculate average speed etc.??

yeah but how do you use it at 140+MPH with a big leather glove on?

Any sort of timing by ANYONE at a track day invalidates any insurance you may have taken out.

Also wonder if it invalidates the organisers insurance too ?

If you happen to have timing gear, you very often find circuits have their own beacons, and forget to turn them off. ;)

Dunno, but some organisers do let you use timing equipment, as long as you dont ride like a tw@T chasing tenths etc

Thats what your brolly dolly is for - when she is not keeping the sun off you or massaging your aching muscles or changing you wheels!

Easiest way of getting round that is to put the laptimer under your seat pod, most of the bigger circuits like Brands, Snetty etc have their own beacons and they're quite often left on.

I bought my laptimer from Rollcentre and it cost about £250 but if you go onto the Bemsee website (british m/cycle racing club) www.bemsee.co.uk they have a For Sale section and people are always selling stuff like that.

The good thing about a laptimer is that some of them like my one downloads to your pc and you can keep a record of laptimes for each circuit, you can note your gearing, tyre pressures etc.....that may not be what you want but its handy to have!

The 999 lap timer works in conjunction with the clock and the speedo by some clever electrickery. You press the starter button to stop/start it.Thats while the clocks are in lap time mode of course.
If you want a cheap lap timer,HPS sell one for 25quid that fits on the handlebars.Failing that, why not tape a stopwatch to the bars?

Mate how are you gonna use one of them with gloves on?! At silly speeds?

Or even more dodgy, ...and even more expensive...

You could just do what my mate does to his R6, and gets his little camcorder, and tapes it round-and-round-and-round his pillion seat, using a matching-R6-blue electrical tape.
So it looks like a really really badly made single seat conversion. Worringly no one has ever stopped him yet! :alien:

Hey presto, lap times and good home videos! :)

;) Vx
