View Full Version : Cadwell or Oulton
Following on from another thread I will ask the question why more people from down south go to Cadwell rather than Oulton.
I have just done some very quick mileage/time checks from Central London/West London/Kent/Surrey and in most instances Oulton is closer or at worst the same distance.
I know that the DD round goes there, but that has only been this year. I know that Cadwell is often cheaper (usually a track charges more due to facilities?)
So how many of you have been to Oulton compared to how many have been to Cadwell and what's your reasoning?
I was thinking of a poll, but adding more tracks, although I'm guessing brands would get the most votes :rolleye: being "local"

I've done Cadders 4 times and Oulton none.
Went to Cadwell for TA2 and loved it, so keep going back for more.
I'd love to ride Oulton, and it's on my list of things to do next season... maybe see ya there Lily, bring cookies!

Its not a geographical decision that decides which tracks I'll go to. I've done both, they are both fabulous for different reasons.
The only reason that I haven't been to Oulton this year is because there's no DD race there.

That makes total sense this year and I know you have been up to Oulton before as have a few others, I just wonder why more hadn't

Cuz its erp nirf and the weather's always cr@p!! ;)
technically i think its further south than Cadwell :P
and far more accessible!!!
ps, any chance you could change your sig pic as i keep thinking you have nicked my bike :P
I've done both, but prefer Oulton out of all the tracks i've done (only done 5 different tracks though), and massive bonus its on the doorstep

But it always rains at Cadwell anyway!!!! ;)
As for the pic - if you look closely you'll see its the class 996R not the crass 998S!!!! ;):o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o
Oi! You leave Bob alone! :D

happy at either but Oulton is best
Never been to Oulton, only done Cadwell this year because of DD. But I'm glad I did.
To be honest I only started riding on track last year in September and because I entered DD in October I've never been up there for Oulton.
It looks good though, I'd like to do it.

Same here Steve.
Done both, like Cadwell a lot but Oulton is jut that bit better.
Cant put my finger on it but its a lot more flowing if you know what I mean?
The expense of Oulton compared to cadwell is 50% more but dont think it is half as good again but is better.
Cadwell for me is 80-90 miles away Oulton is 100+.
You always seem to discount the other Northern England bigger circuit of Croft too, how many southerners have been up there then?
Nice track, good basic facilities and the track layout is excellent, good mix of everything really, and that is 69 miles door to door for me :D

Good run off areas at Croft wouldn't you say Geoff?
;)
OY,
It looks like Croft will continue to be used for BSB. in 2004 it got the biggest crowd for a BSB meeting.
Yes, even bigger than that overblown mini moto track AKA the brands indy Circuit.
On the topic of Mini Motos, the track in the car park at Tad only got used a few times, then someone got greedy and terminal beaurocracy. I am told Clifton moor @ Bookers?? cash and carry is a regular weekend venue though now and I was told it was free???
As for the oulton/cadwell debate it's yonks since I rode Oulton but from what I can remember I can pretty much scare myself at either track!! Even at the snails pace I go at!

been trying to persaude Fred to head over there so watch this space....
so why have only 2 southerners replied?
You don't count! :P

sorry Tony....
but strangely enough i don't think the results of the poll are reflective of the actual facts as people are not responding.
Maybe a better poll would be to find out which circuits people had visited this year. Obviously folks who race would visit a fair few, but by the end of this year I will have probably been to:
Oulton
Donny
Silverstone
Mallory
Rockingham
Cadwell
Brands
Snetterton
Croft
I agree with Rattler i have done both a few times....I think Oulton is better but only just..only reason im not there this year is cos it aint a dd track....
I for one am hoping we can get Oulton into the race series next year ...that would be awesome...................
Phil
This year I've been to:
Brands Indy
Almeria
Cadwell GP
Cadwell Woodlands
Castle Combe
Snetterton
Brands GP
And I will be doing:
Donington
Brands Indy
Cadwell GP

only done cadwell. maily because thats where the first DSC trackday i did was and the fact that i'm racing there this year.
would love to do oulton but its a bloody long way with a trailer for me maybe 5 hours? cadwell is 3. and there are lots of good circuits that are loads nearer. brands, snett silverstone donington, rockingham. i have been there spectating in the past and think its a great circuit. would love to have it on the DD list next year as would most other i expect.
been to neither as i dont enjoy trackdays alone as far as travelling etc is concerned, it would worry me if anything happened and I was stranded somewhere ....
I have been as far north as Mallory ...
I would happily do Oulton and am only getting Cadwell done this year as its TA4 and i'm being chauffered ...
I think Cadwell is more popular simply because they run the track for something or other pretty much every day, so there's loads of availability.
For people like me, work commitments and shortage of dosh means that I can't plan out a trackday calendar for the year, I'm more likely to go on an ad-hoc basis and therefore more likely to find an event happening at Cadwell than at Oulton at any given time.
So far this year, I've been to (Track days/Spectating)
Oulton
Donny
Silverstone
Mallory
Cadwell
Brands
Snetterton
Will be at Rocky next month for CSS, possibly a TD at Croft if Gizmo can sort it out also
Don't know if this is relevant or not. I used to got all over the country on bike track days a few years ago, Brands, Goodwood, Oulton, Donny, Croft. Rode there and back. The long distance Jobbies meant a B&B stay the night before.
Trackday prices for Brands, Donny and Oulton seem to have gone up a lot more relative to Cadwell and Croft. I have a bit of a thing about not paying more than £100 for a bike trackday, hence I visit Croft and Cadwell more with a very rare trip elsewhere.
Ray.
PS don't know if this is of any interest or how difficult it will be to get a place but but Leeming are doing an Airfield day for £45. Proceeds to Charity. More info. on http://www.bifracing.co.uk Follow the Leeming Motorcycle Club link.

done this year:
snetterton
rockingham
brands indy
brands gp
cadwell gp
cadwell woodland
doing soon:
donington
Dickie
I reckon its probably closer to 4 hours from you, but check with Jamie as he has done it with the trailer (and we all know how slow he is :P )
I can understand that DD racers don't want to do it this year as they have other priorities and I can understand what Jools says about not being able to plan ahead as much.
I guess it just gets frustrating for me when we get a bit of a slating for not going to Cadwell, Brands or Snett when we are not that keen and have Oulton near by yet many folks come up with excuses for not coming to Oulton yet will go to Cadwell.

i get to add a few more if we are doing specific circuits...
Silverstone national and GP
Donny national and full
Yeah, you and Freak are slack for not coming down to the southern tracks!
Oh hang on, weren't you at Brands on Monday!
I wouldn't worry about it Lily, I'll make it up to Oulton next year I think. If it makes it onto the DD calendar ;)
I forgot to add, I'll be doing Rockingham as well this year. Maybe a few times, and maybe Silverstone as well :D

excellent TP, book me a space in the van ....

lol - for which one!
Oulton has been around £150 for as long as I have been doing trackdays (peak time), some organisers are starting to bump the price up a couple of quid now, and someone like Track-time are charging more if you turn up on the day:puzzled: Surely they'd be glad to sell the place let alone at a premium
Luckily No Limits will give DSC members a discount, plus several other forums have some affliliation with other TD comapnies (Throttle Monkey to name but one)
Although I do find the prices of say a Brands day shocking by comparison, but Apex's deal was far to good to miss out on at that price making it a must do for me at least.
Hopefully a similar day (unofficial DSC Track day) is going to happen next year at Oulton or Donnington, possibly Croft, I have already approached one company regarding this and hopefully have something on the table as soon as 2006 dates come out.
Dibble anytime you want to venture further North for a track day you're more than welcome mate
if TA4 was at Oulton everyone would be going, of that im sure.
Oulton is amazing probably the best circuit i have been on and i have done ALL the top tracks in the Uk.....well worth the trip and easily worth the 149 i have payed twice.............brilliant place..............................
TA6 Oulton and round 4 of the DD Oulton.................................
any takers

Well said that man!!
Having now been to Brands and seen the Indy circuit I think some folks would be surprised at how good Oulton is.
I think people have this belief that its mile sup north when its only just off the M6 well south of manchester etc.
Dibble get yer butt up here ya big girls blouse!
I'd be tempted to enter as a wildcard at Oulton for DD :D
Just gotta strap the testastretta into a monie frame somehow!

I'd guess because they're the closest circuits to us, we can get to Silverstone is around 2 hours, Donny about 90 mins, Oulton 30
Took me 4 hours to get to Cadwell, 5 hours to get to Snet, 2.5 hours to get to Castle Combe and it's around 45 minutes to Brands.
You need a faster van! lol!!

Sure but most stay over and enjoy BBQ's, the banter and the camaraderie that is DD.......its all part of the experience and the distance almost become irrelevent..:)

ok confused here...
we did snett to dibbles in under 2 hours. dibbles to brands in about 20 mins so we could go via brands and dibbles from yours and still get there quicker than you :o
And we were fully loaded with two bikes in a hire van! You driving a metro with a trailer Tony?
Nah - just lots of traffic when I was going to Snet - but it's still 3 - 3.5 hours. We had the kids too so had to stop for food.

Problem is for me personally being self employed (I know Tony's gonna come back and say so is he!!!) I'd have to take a day off to travel etc, probably another day (2 half days) to sort bike, load and unload, hire a van blah blah blah.
For me to do a TD in the week effectively costs me the best part of a grand with paying for the TD, van, fuel for van, loss of days pay, wear and tear on bike (tyres, oil etc) fuel for bike, food/drink.
Thus why I am doing as many TD's at weekends this year, they cost a bit more, but that is easy outweighed by not losing a days pay.

because they are circuits i have ridden on and feel comfortable. If I was to do DD it would cost me a fair amount and I doubt I would get much chance to do track days as well to get experience as such I would prefer tracks I have already been to and feel happy with.

Your sponsor probably helps out though eh? ;)
Doubt I/we would get any sponsorship from the flat cap and whipet brigade Ooooop Nurf!
Nudging back on topic....
Been to both, Cadwell was visited for the first time this year, and I'll be back for TA4.
Oulton flows more than Cadwell, which makes Cadwell to me, more challenging.
Cadwell's cheaper, more available and somewhat more evocative than Oulton (for me)
If there's a TD at Oulton on 26th July, I'm up for doing it back to back with Cadwell. All in the interest of science of course.
Both are 5 hours+ with the trailer from my seaside abode.

Well it certainly helps but it still doesn't make up for me missing out my daily rate, not by a long shot.
have done cadwell twice and oulton once
both excellent tracks but i prefer the more technical
cadwell with all the up and downy bits:roll:
