The memory card was full!!!!!

It doesn't have the forks back in it yet anyway, that happens on Tuesday. It's suspended by ratchet straps from the garage roof at the moment.

I'm sure you can't be the only 998R owner on here - can't think of another though???

TP
11-Jul-2005, 13:13
Maybe not, maybe the 998R owners in the club aren't active on the forum?

In the meantime, I've had some photo's sent to me. The bike was used for an article in Superbike magazine and this picture was on the cover.

Had various other Ducati's over the years including a 996sps and a 996R.
The 998R is brilliant.Mine is very heavily modified but even standard it was brilliant.
Believe me you will not regret it.

Has Ray, or one of the Yorkshire lads got one as well, i sincerely hope so, gotta make them a bit common:lol:

11-Jul-2005, 13:34
Heavily modified you say ..I get mine tomorrow and I've organised a few cosmetic touches for her but no performance upgrades yet. I haven't even ridden it! Although the Corse slipper clutch I have in my 996 will be going into it.

A couple of questions:

1 - You've had the good bikes, a 996SPS, 996R and 998R. Which one was the best and why?

2 - What mods have you made to it, and why?

I've got another window open with ebay beckoning as we speak ...

The 998R is the best bike by far.The only thing to watch out for are the brakes. The initial bite you get from the brakes can be very strong and i worried that in a panic situation it would just lock the front up.
Apart from that there is nothing else wrong with it.

Because i have had other Ducati's i had bought various bits and pieces over the years and when i have moved on i have kept the parts and fitted them to the new bikes.
Mostly the usual bits, carbon airtubes, slipper clutch, carbon headlight support.
I have also changed all the nuts and bolts for Titanium. And i do mean ALL.
Ohlins forks with A.P.Lockheed calipers and discs.Less initial bite but more feel and a lot more progressive. Also changed the brake and clutch master cylinders for radial ones.

Have fitted a lightweight flywheel to the engine as well. Fitted the slipper clutch at the same time.Lets the engine spin up quicker and also gives more engine braking.

Also fitted the race magnesium swingarm to try and stop the thing wheelying all over the place. It didn't work.
Would not recommend doing this unless you were going to use the thing on the race track all the time.I had to change the rear spring to cope with the longer swingam but the spring is absolutely solid.Bit too bumpy for my liking.Brilliant on the track though.

I am sure there are a lot more mods but these are the main ones.

I have to go and do some work now.
Good luck with the bike and if you want to ask me any more please feel free.

All right then, I'll come out of the closet.

I have a 998r. Maybe other owners are keeping a low profile to remain anonymous 'cos people keep wanting to buy 'em?!!

Errr .. I was only asking about bikes Ray!

So that's three, that's better. Still more exclusive than those 'common as muck' 996R's and seems to be a much better bike :D

Boy, don't you change you're tune mate! Oh, 996R's are better than those crappy 998R's you said. They not won much, unlike the 996R. Give me a 996R anyday. Plus an Aussie won on a 6R. Sheesh.

Maybe why more have the 6R than the 8R...

Flanks,

996r are totally gutless 3 hp less don't ya know, horrible plastic seat, not carbon. :P

Some of the cognescenti prefer the 6r for the reason that it was the last of the line to actually win WSBK but for others the 8r is/was the top of the pile before Ducati called time on the series.

Oi!

The price of that toy you might like has just gone up!

The 6R has an appeal to me because of the Bayliss connection. But there's no doubting the 8R is a better specced bike.

The ultimate machine in the best shape.
