out for a thrash late in the afternoon today, just done familiar 70ish mile round trip and was about 2 miles from home when i noticed on slowing down that the bike started backfiring very loudly. Felt like the seat pad was being punched from underneath:o
No loss of power, no warning lights, running a little warm (about 85-89 deg C) but still pulling well. I looked behind for a cloud of smoke and all ok. Stopped, no sign of oil or anything untowards. Seeing as though i was only a mile or 2 from home i thought i would see if i could make it.
No probs, got home ok.
A thousand and 1 things running through my mind including the thought of missing TA4 and also a day i've booked with focussed events on the friday (29th) day at cadwell.
Left if it in my garage for an hour or so to cool down and went and had a beer to cool myself down too.
Feeling shi**y thinking about it, so eventually went and had a look, took off fairing panels and fired it up and immediately saw the problem:
The header pipe on the rear cylinder had a big crack all the way around the weld!:o:o
Oh well, not blown motor after all just a blowing exhaust!:P
See if i can get it replaced in time on warranty!!

Chillo, is it a Ti system? I've seen quite a few Ducati race bikes with Ti headers that split, thus why the Leo Vinci system doesn't use Ti headers

chillo

no, its just got the standard headers!
I had heard about probs with Ti headers too
never heard of a standard one doing this though????

was ready to chuck the thing in the bin and go down to the nearest suzuki dealer and get a k5 gix1000!:burn:

Aw phuck, gorra say that Gixer looks the dogs dangly's! Been offeredf a rather special Crescent (Rizla) K5 through JR but can't quite bring myself to go riceburning. Sorely tempted though, especially when I get "done" on Park striaght by R1's, gixers et al.

Prob not, but not sure I want to go that route after spending so much on my "S". Think I would rather get Nelly to look at getting a bit more out of the existing motor.

to be fair, a 998/9s motor is very similiar to the 'r'
but a mate has a 998s with pc3(custom map), down geared a couple of teeth and i can still outdrag him.
I'm on stock gearing, race air filters and Termi

Chillo

I have taken my standard pipes off recently (999r 04), you could either borrow the rear header,or send the replacement part back once you receive it.

The offers there if you need another option.

Its a fairly common problem

I raced an SPS for three years and had this happen a couple of times.

The replacement flange is £260 from a dealers. I went and found a local specialist welder and he did an excellent job for £10. Lasted much longer than the original too.

had it welded up yesterday, real nice job but was told that pipe is quite thin so expect it to go again eventually.

test it tonight:devil::burn:

NEWSFLASH
(apologies to Chillo for hi-jacking the thread!)

The 999S will be ready Friday morning. Work necessary to get it back on the road has been done!
Needs to go back after the end of the silly season to replace the crankshaft and also the crankcases (peeling paint syndrome), as that job would have taken much longer and left me ride-less for Cadders. I am assured that the bike will hold out fine for the remainder of the summer.

Paul, thanks for your offer mate, genuinely chuffed that you offered your special lovely! (even though the bike in question is a little old-fashioned and outmoded  )
