Hi all
New member to the forum! I have been browsing now for a while & I must say I think this forum is first class. You seem like a real friendly bunch willing to share your knowledge!
I am in the process of a re-build of my 748. It underwent a bit of a make over from it's original (dare I say it Yellow) guise last winter and now sports a black body!
I am now looking to re-build the project with an 853 kit. I have had a look around and there is a chap in Leeds called Ducati John who really seems to know his stuff.
Has anyone else had any experience of him or can you recommend the best place to have an 853 kit fitted?
Thanks
Chris.

hi chris.
welcome
my mates just got his 748 converted to a 853. I was hoping to get out for a ride 31.7. weather permiting to see close hand what it goes like . He said it is awesome - 142 bhp.
run it in in two days 500 miles around the M25. there is only 1 engine builder John Hackett of JHPDucati Coventry. What he does'nt know about engines no one does. rich

The second part of that statement I agree with, the first part is open to debate, there are a few established engine houses that can build you a top notch motor in 853 guise.
I personally feel that better value for money can be obtained from either Nelly at Cornerspeed (yes, he does look after my bike) or from Neil Spalding at www.sigmaperformance.co.uk (he's the fellow that writes a lot the techie articles for the MCN race section and elsewhere including bike.
Depends like someone says on how far you want to travel ...
Nelly is is nottingham and Neil is in Tunbridge Wells ... takes your pic ...
Also did someone say they were getting 142bhp from an 853, wihout wanting to cause offence, I very very much doubt it ... thats 04 999R power and a bit ...
I was on to Nelly a while ago and he was out of stock.
Neil Spalding is your man at sigma, good stuff high quality and will supply ready for you to fit. Not cheap mind.
otherwise just get a 996 lump and chuck it in.
make a few calls to either Nelly or Neil and go from there.
ps you wont get 140 HP out of it dibs
keefer how much work is involved in fitting the 853 kit and how much was it roughly
could 2 fairly competent guys fit it between them ??:frog::frog:

Thanks for the help guys! Ill have a ring round during the week and let you know!
There was a number of different ideas in this post about the actual bhp that the 853 kit will produce.
Has anyone actually had it done and tested?
Thanks for the welcome to the club! General feedback on having my 748 black has been good. Any comments welcome!

If you fit an 853 kit to a standard BIP you will get a nice increase of low/mid range torque but max power will not be significantly higher, maybe 5-10HP. To achieve the full benefit of an 853 conversion you will need to look at valves, cams, rods, cranks, balancing etc.
still no expected price for the kit ??
£750-£850 for the kit alone. IIRC
for all the parts required from sigma it came in at £900 or so.
you will need to exchange the barrels so if you want to keep yours until you get everything. so you can do it over a weekend. there will be a holding charge which you will get back when you send him your barrels.
deej I would say that a competent person should be able to get on with the job on there own. but only you really know your limits.
some special tool will be required. the bolts that hold the head on need a C shaped tool to get around the head

just had my 851 taken out to 955 by Ducati John in Leeds - can't recommend him highly enough - she now has a 916 crank and rods + 916 heads to go with the 955 Corse barrels and pistons.
I've not taken her past 6000rpm but up to that point she is pulling like an express - yeeeehah
I'm after a set of 916SP heads now though...
speak to John on 0113 2829933, very helpful guy.
cheers
Neil
