My recently aquired sps has a problem where I can not rev it past 6-7K rpm. If I do it feels like the ignition has been killed, then it fires, then dies. Anyone got any clues as to what I should be looking at to fix this. The bike has 50mm termis + chip (#078 I think) in a P8 ECU. Also what plugs should I be running in this a I can't find A55V plugs anywhere.

Shazaam!

Fuel filter.

Glad my thoughts were on a similar vein. I've just chaged the fuel filter with still the same result.

Maybe a poor connection in the ignition circuit feed that goes via the handlebar switch - so its ok up to a certain current, but then the resistive losses cause the coil/ignitor voltage to fall too low.
Do you get misfiring if you hold it just below the 'dead zone' ?

My 996 SPS did this intermittantly for a while - turned out to be a loose connection into the P8 computer.

There are 2 multi-plugs that go into the unit - one either side at the top/front of each side (if you follow?!). One of these was not making good contact and it felt like the bike was running on one cylinder....because it was!

Whip them both out, then check they're clean and tight fitting when you put them back in. After that I'm out of ideas/experience I'm afraid!

Good luck!

I can hold it just below the "dead zone" without any issue. Go over and wallop nothing. I'm thinking it may be either the plugs or coils breaking down under load.

Loose connection? does the rev counter bounce around?

Could be the alternator nut I guess, but that would be a worst case scenario, I doubt you can check that easily not which taking the l/h casing off... when was the last service? how many miles? has the alternator nut been re-torqued after the last big service?

Rev counter is steady as a rock all the way round to the problem area.

Bike as last serviced by Ducati Coventry in June 04, no mention if the alternator nut was re-torqued on the job sheet. The engine has done less than 10K Km, best approximation as its had at least 3 new speedo's with previous owners.

I'm guessing it's been done if it's been done at JHP, an easy sign would be newish gasket sealant on the cases, you could call JHP with the details and they'll be able to give you a proper run down of what was done

Just some thoughts:

1) Bad battery.
2) Broken fuel line in tank or pinched outside line.
3) Tank ventilation, try with gas lid open, beware of fuel spill.
