Just been down the main road into sheffield about 20mins ago from the motorway. Crafty camera van parked up, I thought these guys were supposed to make themselfs visable ? The actual gatso was on a tripod and the whole unit was painted black and the van was parked offset about 20metres away. Its dark, so you dont see the camera and the van was facing the traffic flow so you couldnt see any of the hi-visability stickers on it.

Damn sneaky if you ask me that one. Good job I stick to the limit.

there was some rule about signs and visibility, but it depends on whether that county is claimging the money from the cameras or not. Anyway, I think a lot of the rules have been relaxed in time, ,;but that might be just rumour.

I got done in Lincolnshire for 73 in a 60 limit, in the middle of nowhere. THere were markings on the road, but then there are dozens of them on the A52. The van was on the OPPOSITE side of the road, and I spotted it. The camera was black and sat on my side, only noticed it when it flashed at me. It was the first time I'd encountered one of the vans so I was surprised to say the least.

Black camera on a tripod is the "mini gatso".

Doesn't it make you feel safer though.

Question it is a partnership so what can you offer in return?

They list all the mobile speed traps on their web site. Always worth a weekly check.

I dont think there are rules as such, they are ACPO guidlines.

The guidelines are not worth the paper they are scribbled on.

You will be wasting your breath with a local magistrate if you wanna argue the toss about the guidelines and circumstances of you heinious society damaging crime!

If you wanna look for loopholes, play the system or whatever there is no better webiste than www.pepipoo.com

Speed on its own doesn't hurt anyone but an accident at any speed does.

Ray.

Paying much more attention to other road users and "developing hazzards" than to possible camera vans, or in fact the EXACT reading on the speedo at any given time. Which is surely how it ought to be?

:D In my neck of the woods, the vans will only generally be in the speed restricted areas, or areas of greater hazard.

Rule number 1, stick to the 30.40.50,s limits, and from post to post. If your making progress inbetween, it will be a nice rest bite!

i agree with cameras in built up areas etc etc
but when they are resorting to using an 'old' dark blue van with ladders on the roof so it looks like a builders van and parking in the entrance to a field in open countryside KNOWHERE NEAR any built up areas etc is just taking the p***:mad::mad::mad::mad:

if you look at the south yorkshire site it shows an increase in accidents again perhaps indicating that cameras are not THE answer. whilst I am not happy about them I can see that fixed units at accident black spots with hi visibility markings can be a benefit.

Cameras/vans and units obscured for the purpose of being sneaky is just revenue boosting by some power crazy plod, whether that be the chief PO or whoever instructs the person where to site the unit.

I live in a small village within the 30 limit about 100 YDS from the 30/60 signs and as many vehicles are overtaking past our house and some are (guessing) in excess of 60 mph, I would be pleased to see a fixed camera at the end of the road before someone in my family or know is killed.

I drive around most of the UK and have seen my fair share of camera units and there are many that are poorly positioned, equally there are many blackspots that could benefit from them.

As regards covert detection, I "observed" such an attempt in Cumbria last year.....
Just coming out of Carlisle towards Cockermouth on the A595 at the end of the first straight section of NSL single carriageway after crawling alongatwisty bit with no safe overtakes, I spied a dark blue van in a hull down position in a drop off at the side of the road about 5 feet below the level of the carriageway.
I was really impressed to see that it was a local camera safety van sited there with the operator literally sniping over the verge at passing traffic.
Not cricket I'm afraid, luckily my spidey senses saved the day for myself & my 4 mates....

Same old excusses from the camera partneships about saving lives lardyla, so how come the cameras arent outside every school in 20mph zones.
All accidents are up in everyone of the counties that rely heavily on cameras
we all no the facts cameras dont catch, drivers that drive dangerously/drugged-up/****ed-up/phoned-up/uninsured/untaxed/no MOT.
We get the same politically correct waffle from some on this site and yet violent crime is up along with general vandilism.
It took the police 20 miniutes to respond to a call I made about a group of Chavs dealing Drugs from a car.
But then they dont make money out of arrests like that.
We dont see high profile Drug Partnerships because its not fashionable the In-thing is speed it used to be drink driving.
If cameras where purely for blackspots and the profits went to victims of crime instead of the treasury then they might be more acceptable, but when they place them on a hill of a 2 lane carrigeway so they catch you overtaking caravans etc (A303) then Im afraid it leaves you no option but to be sceptical.

I don't recall anyone being politically correct, merely pointing out that the rules are there, you know what they are and you know what the outcome is if you get got. The throttle goes both ways.

We dont see high profile Drug Partnerships

You're obviously not looking hard enough, each Police area is required to have one and they have a lot of resources put in to them and make life difficult for the real criminals as you put them.
Hint, some of us drive big stripey cars with flashy lights and ECILOP on the front.
Some of us could walk past you in the street and you wouldn't notice.
Horses for courses.
When will you understand that ACTUAL POLICING, you know, the poor sods who you **** off on a regular basis, receive absolutely ZERO income from the Camera setups.
If we did I'd be on permanent overtime sat at the side of the A1 zapping motorists at 79.1mph
But what do I know, I just sweep the bits up after.
OK, I fibbed.... I tell someone else to sweep up......
As for the Chav dealers.....a 20 minute response to a call like that is not bad... I mean, you wouldn't want the Police to speed unnecessarily, would you?
Not like it's life or death is it??
;)
PS - the actual spelling is VANDALISM... standards are falling, I blame the Teachers........

Sorry Rushjob just back from Hols and spelling was a bit of a rush, yer i faled my inglish ho level.
Im retaking it in Chav grade.
As for not seeing that police vehicle zooming around your right I dont see them there an endangered species around here my whole point.
Ive just ridden 1100 miles around Devon and Cornwall and seen 1 Traffic patrol car.
But like everyone else you see 100's on mobile phones.
And as for political correct'ness come on the whole recruitment drive is based on what you think about our foreign friends rather than your apptitude to do good job.
And yes I do know quite a few in the force and most of them want out for the very reason that the police are being politisized, they no longer hold-up the law for all but for those minorities that shout loudest.
We will soon have most police tasks taken over by numpties with more so called powers given to others,Traffic wardens the new type of Specials and Motorway patrol police having certain tasks assigned to the new highways dept (M6 Is trialing this at the Mo)
Maybe they do have a Drugs partnership where I live but its never been in the local paper but I can always find something about the wonderfull things the camera partnerships are doing to save the world.
Im afraid you may take it as a dig at real police officers thats not the case I want real Police not some excuse to save money on the service,I want to see traffic cops because they have discretion wether to prosecute someone for 10 miles over but when they stop that person they could also be drunk.
Polls show that there is a definite link in the standing of the police and the rise in speed cameras and yet the police federation is not fighting its corner,we dont want the latest gadgets just more visible policing.
And No I would'nt want to pick up the peices either or tell relatives etc but life is a coin and one day your lose the toss wether it be through illness/accident or just old age so Im goining to enjoy it the way I want to with a touch of controlled risk.

04-Sep-2005, 21:44
no apparently not, apparently if a police officer makes a statement that statement is considered to be the word of god, and will convict any mortal, (unless of course you have your own video to prove you wertent speeding which i didnt have, and im not sure it would have been admissable even if i did have) a witness would have been a good way that i could have proven him to be a liar....Hmm what happened to the witness??,
any way he lied and i paid, it was totally corrupt.
life isnt fair...... but thats life !!

however pepipoo are a must visit website for anyone accused of speeding

its a well long story and i am much calmer now i have my licence back
