View Full Version : Year of Monster Tank change ?
I'm thinking of getting a monster, only having ever test ridden one road-legal one many years ago.
(Psychlist's monnie doesnt count !)
But as a lanky-git, I've remembered that the original tank shape was terrible for my sticky-out knees !
The 'new' tank however, has a more horizontal knee-cutout which is much more comfy.
Anyone know what year it was introduced ?

main change was carbed to fuel injected Phil - approx 2001 was the changeover
a bit more:
Carbed 600's from early 90's, till approx 98
Then updated (same 583cc) engine for M600, tho is NOT compatible with early engine on internal parts, cyl barrells etc.
Then 2001, new fuel injected M620 comes out - S version has a bit more goodies on it.
Injected tank is deeper slightly, tho it has to hold all the 'internals' - the pump etc. less mpg for an injected bike.
The dark 620 has a plastic tank, which is smaller internally, and single disc & other basic bits etc
can be more of an anorak if you like?:puzzled:
but basically, the 'ie' versions will be more accomodating for a taller person. The 'S' version will be a tad taller still.
The S4/S4R are taller than the M1000/900ie versions, unless the 900 is an S model........

Heres a good breakdown on the Monsters, although it doesnt cover some of the unique models made for the Euro and Japanese markets (ie M400)

The S4's got the new shape tank, but not sure of date they became available. Most other monsters with the new tank shape 600/750/900 left the factory late 2000, but were not registered until 2001. The 620's appeared later than this once the 600 was phased out.
Both my own 900ie's were registerd in 2001 & 2002, but actually left the factory as 2000 spec bikes. I found this out the hard way after ordering a new rear brake m/cyl for a 2001 bike, and it didn't fit as mine had a 2000 spec one fitted!:rolleye:
Both my 900's have the later tank shape.

Yep,those '01,'02 bikes were made of an odd collection of parts. Our M900ie is an '02 regd bike.It has the later style clocks,(although no imobiliser),tank/seat,etc,but its the older 851 derived frame.
Bit of a minefeild when buying parts.
