View Full Version : Have you seen this SS?
Duke'ists,
The attached pic is a 750SS that I built from a pile of scrap a couple of yeras or so ago. I sold it to a South African guy, and I am wondering if it is still blasting around London.
It is pretty unique as you can see, and the more I look at the picture the more I think 'Why did I sell It???'
I am bidding on a wrecker again on ebay, so hopefully I will be able to do the same thing again, only better!
If anyone has seen the beauty about, let me know!
I LOVE SS's probably more than any other bike that I have had, bar none! soul... pure beauty and soul!

Looks really nice Levers and you obviously have great taste.
If you are going to that much trouble though, why wouldn't you go for a 900 instead?

Very nice - I like the paintwork, good to see a bike thats a little bit different.
Gotta agree with Chi though - go for the big boy :)

Nice. I'm beginning to get into them. I think SS's make a an ideal real-world sportsbike. The latest rockets are just too fast and demand to be ridden too fast which, is these times is a sure fire way to losing one's licence or ending up in casualty.
Oh no, don't get me wrong. It would always be the 900 if possible, I've had two of them and they're great. The 750 is good ,though down on power slightly, but to be fair not really where it counted , on the road. What the 750 lacked was the rough grunt of the 900, and it's that raw edge of the 900 I prefer.
I only bought the 750 because it was so cheap, and along with a crashed 900 at the same time with a wrecked engine spawned the bike you see before you!
I have an SRX600 which is for those who don't know, a yamaha 600 cafe race single at the moment. I am in the last stage of a rebuild on that, and once sold hopefullya SS will be my next project.

Yep-nice looking SS. I've just bought an 851 SP2, so I may have to sell my 1994 750SS to keep the bank manager happy, but I'm reluctant as they look so good. I'm wondering what people's views are on these bikes regarding any increase in value over the next few years - their not the most glamorous Duke, but they have such charm and style, I'm wondering if I should hold onto it for a few years to see what happens. Or are they just not in limited enough numbers to be candidates for increases ?
Come on, if a mk.I cortina can achive 'classic' status, the SS must be a sure fire winner !
Pic attached.

IMHO, I think you're correct - because the SS bikes were made in such high numbers and they don't really have any real racing history behind them, they won't demand a high price as a collectible. It doesn't mean that the SS is not a cherished bike. On the contrary!
What it does mean is that a bike, especially an SS, should be ridden and not an investment.
Just enjoy the bike!

In France where the SS have always been loved, the 900 carbs are becoming collection bikes. Most of them are sold between 4500 and 5000 euros, when SSie are sold between 5000 and 5500 euros. It's not rare to find an SS and an SSie with the same mileage (kilometrage) at the same price... My dream is a 91 model, with white frame and wheels. How beautiful...
To me the SS is a beauty, and from the side view you can see where the designers of the 999 got their inspiration. The square headlamp is a bit dated granted, but the trellis frame, slab sides, slim front, sculptered tank, plus the gold brembo's , twin booming zorsts, and the deep red all do it for me. I have had many many many bikes, and few have touched me so deep as the SS. Maybe I'm getting old but I love 'em. Roll on SS number 5!

That is certainly a beautiful bike...and different to the point of good taste!
I have the '03 ss with the sculptured front lamp...Not my first choice of duke but I love the ride position and feel of it. It's fairly cheap and simple to work on so that's my option for staying with one.
I feel I need a 900 next.
I find the older SS's reminicsent of the 888 and I know that it's an iconic bike but it just doesn't do it for me...( yes I'm prepared to be shot down in flames!)
I'll be interested to see what the mk 5 will be like...it will probably be at this point I will need an upgrade!;)

Unfortunately I'm not sure there will be an mk5... I read somewhere that the 2006 model of the 1000ss (which is already the last ss available) may be the last one of the family, and that the SportClassics will take over from it... I definitely hope what I read is wrong... :(:(:(:(:(

Mmm...thought so. I like the sound of the 1000DS, there was one on flea bay a few months ago that caught my eye (stealth black of course!)
Just not seen many around...
Be sad if they take that option , I think the SS is the affordable option for Duke ownership, and the 750SS a good introduction to dukedom:(

and the SS in the only 2 valves sport bike... assuming most of the people can't afford a DB5.

The quality of your pix is not very good... it's a pity because your bike would have been my desktop wallpaper for a while :D
I LOVE it. thanks for that. And I'm sorry you no longer have it mate... (pardon my English... nicked = stolen?)

I'm sick for you... It's exactly the one I'd like to buy when I can afford... It seems to be strictly standard... a true collection bike.
No hope you get it back one day? Is it a long time it has been stolen?

I'm glad to show you the last 900 SS 1997 imported in France. (except FE models)
I bought it brand new in Germany and imported it in my homecountry end of 1998.
Few modifications :
- Ignition set Perderzini 1.1
- Ohlins Rear shock absorber
- New Shindengen regulator
- Tangential exhaust line + upswept exhaust Termi ...
Current mileage : 23.400 kms
Permanent happiness !!!

Wow, those are really sweet! Who makes them (they don't look like the std. Termi spaghetti's)? Are they equal length? Any dyno figures?

This is an original Silmotor line designed for this model.
The association line + with Termi pipes is perfect. I do not understand why this line wasn't an original equipment ???
I really discovered another bike afterwards !!!
The length is equal ... Unfortunatly, any dyno to provide
:(

I would think primarily cost - it's much easier to stamp those OEM crossovers than the spaghetti's. Also, I think you need to have a modded engine to fully enjoy the benefits of the larger diameter spaghetti's.

I found this brand new exhaust line throughout ... e-bay, in Germany, few months ago.
I paid 508.00 Euros (shipping included ...) which is cheaper than normal price. The main problem is to find this line, now.
Famous exhaust companies all stopped the items production due to the "old age" of this model ...
With this bike, my main goal is to keep it as original as possible, but also add some extra equipments supposed to enhance the look and improve reliabilty and ridding feelings.
According to the insurance rules, engine size modifications are 100% forbidden, reason why I refuse myself to install a 944 kit ... I don't say I do not dream about it ....
Because the open roads look like a battlefield now, I used to ride in respect of settlements ... Unfortunately, French Motorcyclists Police officers don't ride Ducati in my homecountry ...
However, the engine attractiveness is immediatly perceptible during the first ride. Of course, noises level is uprated, but the engine feelings between 4000 and 7000 rpm are incomparable with the original line. Moreover, the engine braking seems to be smoother ...
A friend of mine, owner of a 900 SS 1992 with F.1 exhaust cans, rode mine during few kilometers and was convinced of the interest of this modification. He's currently looking for one, but is facing the major problem : "Obsolete reference" ...
Hope it helps ...

I think Ducati Kaemna still has that tangential/spaghetti system
http://www.ducati-kaemna.de/cms_en/katalog.htm?&view=artikel&artikel=385
Also, while Ducati dealers and Termignoni dealers will tell you "no", you can still get the Termi spaghetti system directly from Termignoni in Italy. It will take a few months and cost A LOT (unless you can get a few people to order)! Last time I inquired, I was told it would be about $3000 US. :o

---> Oooouuupppsss !!! Compare to my few Euros ....
According to Kaemna, the availability of this line isn't permanent ...
I made a good deal, I'm convinced !!!
Yes, I think you did get a good deal! :bouncy:

the SS line was just sexy! Those curves are just erotic. When polished up, the reflection of light is sumptuous and firing the beasts up always brings out the grins!
As for 750 vs 900, I found my 750 much more manageable in traffic and cramped city spaces, and running with 900's on fairly tight back mountain roads always left me in the lead (without the sore wrists of the other guys). Getting on the expressway and grabbing a handful of throttle were the only times I felt less endowed, but putting up with traffic on a hot summer day made me glad I had an oil bath clutch several times.
THe best thing is the differences in personality both sizes had even though they were in the same series (the 400 made for Japan is just too underpowered). Hated to give mine up.
