quicky - is a 748r more expensive to maintain / more fragile than a boggo 748? looking at one at the mo and just wondering as i understand the engine internals and clutch differ

Yep 748R needs belts every 6000 miles/12 months from memory, probably harder or rockers too being a revy little beast

Engines internals Titanium rods, clutch is a slipper, a later one gets you Ohlins forks as well as rear shock, better calipers etc.

A very late one gets you the smooth sided side panels similar to the 998.

hmmmm

i am looking atone and its not that pricey - but know i wont do it justice riding wise - so wondering whether its worth it - suspected that servicing would be that much more............

ahhh but the 'little fzr600' is my £300 trackbike! i also have an fzr600 roadbike and a ducati 600ss - i am looking at getting rid of the latter and getting a 748 you see!!!

I don't think there's a single person on this website who can ride our bikes to the level of performance they were designed to be capable of. Some more than others I agree, but that's it.

Buy the bike because you love it, not because you think you can ride it to it's ability. Go on, you know it makes sense ;)

The 748R is an excelllent bike I reckon - go for it!

Get rid of the FZR's and make the 748 your track bike. You know it makes sense :devil:

there is no way with my cacko skill that i would trust myself with a 748r round a track - besides running a £300er means i have an excuse for being pap!

tbh i love the 748 of any guise - just this 'r' is up at the mo and is a thing of beauty!

Dont think servicing costs differ much to a standard 748, belts are still the same price to buy and have fitted as a standard 748! And if its out of warrenty which it probably will be there is no better place for value and quality then at cornerspeed, were alot of people on here take there bikes!

Yep,

Stick with the FZR for track stuff and treat yerself to the R.

The belts aren't any dearer on an R it's just that you need to do'em twice as often. i.e once a year or 6k miles.

One thing to bear in mind when buying that "bargain" bike is how long ago it was serviced, if its due a service that can run to a good few Hundred quid, suddenly it's little or no cheaper that the bike thats just had a service. A standard R service can be anything from £300 to £500 plus and thats if nothing out of the ordinary needs replacing.

As well as the spec, i.e. model year and extras you need to take into account any other things that might need replacing that can run to hundreds, e.g. Tyres, chain/sprockets when assessing the price. Sorry in advance if this sound like teaching you how to suck eggs.

dont mind the teaching at all! am looking v carefully at it and awaiting answers at the moment - it is a long way from me so i am being veeerrry careful - i am in no mad rush and know that with winter coming there are more more out there

we'll see - i will have a 748 but will not have my arm taken off in the process ! lol

The 748 is a good bike :cool:

The 748R is a great bike :cool: :cool: :cool: the later the better.

6,000 mile service = £575.00 at snells in alton

Normal service = £350.00

If you get one, go 2-3 up on the rear sprocket = even more fun.

3+ teeth on the back requires longer chain, but it`s worth it

Just buy it,they run like an old dog on all but full throttle but what a feeling when your there.They have a real spanking top end and in my and other learned peoples opinion make the best noise of any of the Ducati range(50mm Termis's)thats boom and bite at the same time..Mine has done a credable 10.91 sec standing quarter mile time last year and up to almost silly speeds will not be humbled by the larger variants.Its the sweetest engine in the range but servicing is about £450ish per hit(WH Snells).
