Hi all,
Never done a track day but have been to watch a few club races, last one at brands indy with the dd races. has made me a bit keen to try it out.
Before i get carried away and book one, what sort of lap times do track day riders do at brands hatch indy??
Is there much of a difference between slow, intermediate and fast groups?
:puzzled:
Yes, there are big differences between the groups. As it's your 1st trackday, book yourself in the Novice group until you're comfortable with track riding.
There's a DSC trackday at Brands Indy this Wednesday :eureka:

i'll be coming along to watch but not ride, new to the bike and cant afford to drop it!
want to get a feel for the day before i book in. call me a girl if you like...
my local dealer is motorapido and i blame them for planting the seed that i should do it in the first place, think they are going this wednesday.
Guess that i'm welcome to spectate????
was curious about lap times in each group.

Anything less than a minute is a good time.
Spectators are welcome-someone may shove a spanner in your hand.............

dont mind making tea but you wouldnt want me anywhere near a spanner!
lap time under a minute - for what group?
anyone know what the typical difference in lap times from slow group to inter to fast would be??
pure speculation, but at the indy circuit, approx 5 second spread across each group, with possibly some overlap between groups, and novice having a broader spread of times.
e.g.
Novice 60-75 seconds / lap
Inters 60-70
Fast 50-60

thanks Mr S,
Seems like a big difference in the groups then, 25 seconds from fastest in fast to slowest in the slow, wow.
Guess getting the right group is pretty important! can you move groups?
on such a short circuit, do people get lapped ? i would be nervous about getting in the way.
Is there a club record for track day times?

Dseered...
thanks, i'll go along on wednesday and see what its all about. i've been told its easy and fun.
If there are guys that are going round in 50 seconds I guess the fast group is to be left alone for the meantime
may just scrape under 75 !!

looks good!
are the DSC days considered faster than your usual track day? there seems to be a big "track / race / trick kit / expertise" bias here.
would i be better off on a "normal track day" first.
i know that you all want to promote you own days but some honest advise would be appreciated.

I think I can safely say without fear of contradiction that a DSC trackday is probably the safest way to start your track career. Yes there are some fast boys out there, but they are very respectful and will give an obvious novice loads of room and consideration. There is also loads of free instruction on hand.
Finally, if you are wanting to come to terms with your bike, IMHO there is no better place than a track. If you want to reconsider your decision not to participate on Wednesday, I will personally usher you round and generally help you get your head right way up.
I guarantee you will love it. :sing:

Bring your license with you just in case you can’t resist having a go.
This day on the indi in the novice group will without doubt be the friendliest way
on to a circuit.
I remember thinking about a day and going to watch days before jumping in and having a go.
I was getting meself in a right old state.
The novice group is for riders to get out for the first time or riders just enjoying their bike
without the threat of oncoming cars or licence removal. On Wednesday “unlike some days I have attended” over exuberant riders will be escorted to the next level to play.
Don’t worry about times or groups too much just line up in the novice group roll out of the pit lane
and get amongst it. No racing, just riding some nice bends with no manholes or diesel.
You should have no expectation of a time you have to achieve on your first day out or feel that you are holding anyone up. It is the responsibility of everyone else to be in the right group not yours as a
first timer.
I think the most important thing to get sorted out when you first venture on to the track is to feel like you have as much right to be out there doing your thing as anyone. This normally comes flooding over you the moment you overtake for the first time, immediately justifying your presence.
Never ever feel like your not fast enough to have a go, it is a track day not a race day.
You buy a ticket to ride round at !!!!your own pace!!!!, if that is to fast you will be moved up.
It can’t be to slow in the novice group, they always contain first timers.
The first time is always the hardest but if you’re watching and your thinking you might as well
get it over with, It’s a great place to ride a bike.

So ride down to the meeting(the weather is set fair) and come to the track afterwards-I will happily sell you half a days riding to allow you to break your duck for track riding.
John
I have done 3 days there, and I ride in the novice group, although looking at the times above, I should probably move.
First ever track day - best timed lap, 1m4secs.
Third WET track day - 1m11secs. Great fun in the wet.....
Ade.
Barnsey, as Yeti's said, the DSC day is probably the best way to try out a track day before taking on a commercial day.
If you've never been to a trackday before, and are worried about being a bit slow jump in the novice group. If you're finding yourself quicker than the rest of the group and "getting stuck in traffic" you can always ask to move up (if you're not asked.....). Last year was the first time I went out in the Inters group with any TD organiser, so there's no rush to get out of Novices.
Brands Indy's a short circuit that should be quick to learn, but has some fantastic bends, especially Paddock Hill :D If I didn't have to be at Southampton Airport tomorrow afternoon, I'd be there.
Don't forget, if you do go along, but don't take the bike, you can always borrow one of Ducati UK's bikes for a session or two.

Hmmm ...
the DD lap times were from 55.4 to 67.0, we'll prob all be in the fast group ...
my experience is that there is always a broad range of times in each group - I'm _not_ the fastest guy out there (my best DD time is 61.7), but I'll prob be in the fast group
My wife will be in the novice group, and will _not_ be looking at lap times !
If there are people doing 60's in novice they should move up. No question. They _will_ be putting off other people who are not as fast, and spoiling their day.
