I know 0 about ducati's so can someone tell me what the difference is in a 2003 monster 620 and a 2005 monster 620 ?

thanks :)

Not a great deal with regards to racing one - the biggest difference is that the later models are 6 speed bikes. I have/had an 03 model which is a 5 speed.

I think the 6 speed is definitely the way to go.

Thanks TP

What year did they go 6-speed ?

Also am I right that the following is as far as mods allow ?

Standard engine
Exhaust and PC
Rear Shock and Fork revalve
Belly Pan

And is the monster the only 620 available to race, I'm also assuming as I have 3 years racing behind me I can only go the 620 route ?

There was an 's' version in 2003 which had a 6 speed box. I think it became standard in 05? Not sure, I'd just check the ones you're looking at to make sure. Just don't get a dark, I think these are single front disk. You really don't need to upgrade the brakes, although you can. I ran the standard brakes on mine apart from Performance Friction pads.

As for mods I'm pretty sure that's about it. You can put a power commander on as well if you're super keen. I didn't though.

I'm not sure about next rules and series eligibility. I'm kind of out of the loop at the moment as I'm no longer racing in the series and I'm not racing in it next year. Soemone should be along to help you out shortly I hope.

Good luck though :D

Thanks TP :)
Anyone else want to comment ? Would I have to show my interest now and make sure of a place before I start building a bike ?
For this cost me and the gf could both race and still be saving money !

05 models have larger valves and a variety of front brake set ups (depends what they had at the time!)

Is a monster the No.1 choice for the bigger class or should I look at other models ? :)

The 05 models also have a slipper clutch. 02 onwards only the Dark has 5speed and single disk others are 6speed. 05 has 2pot sliding caliper brakes 300mm discs. Earlier ones have 320mm discs and 4pot goldline calipers.

I'm fairly sure thats right, but I'm sure someone will be along if not

Hmmm, Nothing personal CC but I was under the impression that the "DSC member/novice/not raced for 5 years" rule was still going to be the yardstick in 2006??

I imagine that the DD committee will be in touch soon, depending on numbers......

if you are really clever, you can shop for an early 05 model, which will have the 6 speed, slipper clutch - and also the better 4 pot brakes, as they had a few left when building the early ones this year!:smug:

Which kinda begs the question - out of the 620's what is the best base for a race bike. I'm not well up on 2-valvers...are the Monster 620 and 620ss chassis' basically the same?

When I think it may take me 3 seasons to achieve that level of modifications...

Utterly different chassis.
Monster has a rising-rate linkage, SS is plain cantilever.
Monster has longer travel forks too.
Different steering head angles as well.

You assume correctly providing you are a paid up DSC member on a certain date you would be considered for the 620 class, Last I heard the class was filling up towards maximum numbers so if I were you I would get hold of Chris Bushell and check with him. If the way is clear for you to enter then the later 6-speed 620's would be the way to go, so that would include the later M620Sie and Multistrada but 'm not sure about the 620 Sport (SS type)..

I should be at Cadwell from Saturday evening so feel free to wonder over for a chat although I will only have my 583 there as my 620 still isn't ready.
I say should be at Cadwell because for the last 24hrs I've done nothing as I am a bit under the weather, still got a few days to make a full recovery.

Regarding the mods.

You can fit whatever fairing you like. You can currently see the full range on a grid near you. Varies from Numbered barn door, to MH lookielikie, 916 types, carbon reps and so on.

Surprised no one has gone the desmoseidici route

regarding 620 valve sizes - ducati list same part number for all 620 valves, ie., they would appear to be the same size regardless of year.

personal view (having raced a 5 speed 620SS) is that the 6 speed box doesn't make any difference. However the Ducati slipper clutch (which I believe also locks up under load) might remove clutch judder and give faster starts (ask Dom after this weekend - two blinding starts).

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

...and the lights were out both times ;)

Actually, I got clutch judder too.

I get it on Louigi's bike and the 748's I've raced this year. Must be an inherant issue.

Richard (Sneig) was complaining about clutch judder as well-and his has the later 'slipper' clutch.

It's all up in the air at the moment mate, it depends on when I get work etc.

Sorry to hear about your collarbone, hopefully it's not too painful. Get well soon mate.

I had a 2003 620Sie. It had 5 speed (that was standard on 620s at the time). The seat was higher and you could adjust the suspension more and it had twin front discs. Only the dark had 1 disk and I think you could even have that with 2. The S also had more carbon fibre than standard. Same engine though and no slipper clutch.
