Because BT have the monopoly of telephone exchanges and they ain't giving anything away when they can charge you for it!
You may find that your line is actually a BT one, even though you may not pay them your phonebill.
If you contact any of the ISPs about broadband, they should be able to tell you if you give them your phone number and postcode.
glyn, there is an alternative to broadband through a telephone line - cable - that's assuming it runs by your house. Good site to check all the broadband options is www.whatbroadband.co.uk. Hope this helps. Jiminy

yes i have a land line but don't pay bt for it
i used to
but now pay one tel
yet when i try to sign up online to broadband it tells me i dont have a bt line.
it must still go through the same exchange?
It does go through the same exchange. You won't have to concern yourself with it too much. Call up a broadband provider and they will sort it all out. I personally recommend Tiscali.
