OK, so people know about the million dollar homepage, well, I'm trying to raise some cash for racing (not to become a millionaire - that's next!)

Anyway, have a look at...

The Big Pixel (http://www.domweb.co.uk/thebigpixel)

...and tell yer mates and that :)

I've got 200 FREE blocks for you lucky lucky DSC folk!!

Send me a jpg or gif, and your website address

DSC members with Businesses only please and no porn (unless it's really good)

pixels@thebigpixel.net

I'm thinking that this is the 'new' way forward with sponsorship. One nice big clear name on the side (The Big Pixel) and then as many sponsors as you like on the web page.

Just think, if you could do £50,000 you could run a BSB Privateer team, and people could sponsor you for £50 - how good is that.

Anyway, I only need a little bit, so here goes :D

*as of Monday, my site will be www.thebigpixel.net

Right then, after a very useful U2U from someone more intelligent than me, I'm considering 'giving away' some advertising space on the website, BUT this is to DSC members only AND it must be YOUR business.

I'm still thinking about this, but it seems to make sense.

I think you should improve your system mate, there no "alt" or "title" attribute for the logos, it would be good to see the name of the company or anything when moving the mouse over a pix...

I think anyone using a real browser (like Firefox :D ) will have the same problem than me. You use the "alt" attribute which by definition (alt for "alternate text") SHOULD ONLY BE DISPLAYED WHEN THE PICTURE IS MISSING, not all the time like IE does. So instead of using only alt="bla bla bla" just add the title attribute like title="bla bla bla" in your <IMG> markup.

Need more help?

I never said you were bad. My advice is just that you should test all your web systems in different browsers, at least Internet Explorer and Firefox ( www.mozilla.org ). Internet Explorer is no longer used by 95% of the people. Thanks God, it's closer of 80%... :D

Now go and polish your new bike or something :P

The ALT tag is the recognised W3C standard. If other browsers don't support it then they're pretty poor.

Looks good Dom. Far too many e-commerce businesses on there for me to add to ;)

Now I'm no MS fan, and I'm using FF now, but the figures are actually over 92% IE usage for UK retail, and we've seen a drop in FF users over the last few months :( These are off our site for Oct.

The stats are measured in Visitors and not Hits - two different things.

Anyone who talks about stats in Hits either doesn't know what they're talking about or is trying to make a website sound more popular than it actually is!

Yes it's a W3C standard, which says that the ALT tag must only be displayed when the real content can't be displayed (picture missing on the server). So I repeat it, Internet Explorer is wrong when displaying it for an available content.

http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/struct/objects.html#adef-alt

The poorest browser of the market is Internet Explorer, which is the only one not to respect the W3C standards

The UK is not a good example, Firefox is not much used here. But if you look at the European level, I'm sure IE is closer to 80% of users than 92%.

http://standblog.org/blog/2005/09/26/93114388-mozilla-europe-spreading-mozilla-products-one-language-at-a-time

And because now Opera is free (I mean without advertisement), it's going to be worse for IE 7 which is not helped by its Beta versions

Trust the firefox ;)

Sorry Tonio, but you are wrong - go back and read the specification.

There is no "must only" in there. The definition is summed up thus:

"The alt attribute must be specified for the IMG and AREA elements."

So IE is right in this case.

Also, the TITLE attribute has a completely different useage than for displaying text in place of images. In the case of IMG, the TITLE attribute is not supported.

HTH, (and it's my job to know this kind of thing ;) )

Tonio600
18-Oct-2005, 09:50
I'm sorry but I think YOU're wrong mate (that's also my job that kind of things ;) ). I think you missed the first sentence of the documentation:

Several non-textual elements (IMG, AREA, APPLET, and INPUT) let authors specify alternate text to serve as content when the element cannot be rendered normally.

I agree with you on one point only, of course the "alt" attribute must be specified, but in that case (Dom's BigPixel), there is no reason IE to display it (because all pictures are available...). And even if English is not my mother tongue, I think the word "Alternate" speaks for itself...

Regarding the TITLE attribute, I think you're wrong again:

http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/struct/global.html#h-7.4.3

It isn't mentioned that you can't apply it to the IMG markup... And if you read ALL what they say about it, you'll see that this attribute has been designed to do exactly what web developers working with IE do with the "alt" attribute...

Lol.

My final say on the matter:

Tonio, read the context of the ALT tag. It is used when rendering an image is not possible, for such programs as text-to-speech convertors. It is essential to *always* provide ALT text for images. I think you've lost a lot of the meaning in the translation.

Try running some code through the W3C checker and see what it tells you, as you may be surprised by the results:
