Frame's finally back from the painters, the engine's been to Alan for some power grease and the Bimota is almost rebuilt, so it looks like I'm going to have to start putting this airfix kit back together.

If anyone's interested, I'll post pics of the rebuild.

Wish me luck lads.:D:D:D

Nah, that's no sweat. I have built quite a few looms from scratch, and in fact, this one is a combination of 888 Chassis loom and 996 engine electrics. Only time its a issue is when one of the wires goes awol in the guts of the loom, that or something chaffs through. Takes a few hours of head scratching to track those.

Thanks guys. You all know the hours it takes to do silly, non standard stuff.

Ali, Kettle's always warm.

Dave, engine was fettled by Alan S and now has Cosworth Hi Comp pistons, Arrow 21mm Ti rods, full balance, 431 inlets and G exhausts, STM cam pullys, STM 48 tooth ally basket. Nothing to radical but it should give it the "S" character I was looking for.

Nice engine spec. Rob I can give you an idea of how it should perform, Alan did a similar thing to my old Senna when the belts decided to go AWOL.

Sadly did not put in Ti rods but SP heads with G cams etc. slightly bigger valves, vernier cam timing kit to dial them in properly and DP high comp. pistons. 48 tooth slipper clutch etc. 50mm system.

Tried a few chip combinations but ended up with the 062 as a good allrounder.

She put out 127 bhp at back wheel on open cans and 124 with the Db killers in. Pulls like a train with 062 chip in and no flat spot whereas a 'custom chip' gave a couple more ponies but had a big hole around 5 thou' ish, fine on a track but a pain in traffic..lolol

Rob B
03-Jan-2006, 14:44
Dave,

Thanks for that. Who did the chips? Alan has left me with three versions of what he thought would be a good baseline.

Excuse my ignorance, but was the Senna a 916 or 996? I thought it was 916. Mine's a 996 so should be broadly similar as it hasn't got as good an airbox and will have a 45/50mm exhaust.

DaveB916
03-Jan-2006, 15:04
Rob,

916cc and still on single injectors, tried twin injectors and it was not as good to ride, was quite 'off and onable', now is silky smooth and just pulls cleanly.

Chips came from Alan and very good they are too (Scrummy with ketchup...lolol) now have 2 ECU's one with a 062 chip in and one with an Alan 'special'. This allows me to change ECU's quickly which is surprisingly easier that swapping chips and of course there is less chance of damaging either a chip or ECU, plus the ECU's are set up i.e. CO settings for the chip installed in them, hope that makes sense?

Would be good to hear how she runs, and of course always top RON fuel, Optimax if possible worth the bit extra as an insurance on high comp. pistons....lol

Did you say you have fitted a slipper?

Hmmmm.... yes, the project thing!

When I got the 888 as well as my ST2, Mrs Jools thought that I'd got everything I wanted. She knows me well, but even she took a little time to twig that all I'd done is given myself two bikes to have wish lists for instead of one.

I have a cunning plan that involves going down a similar road as yourself and I'm keeping half an eye open for a crashed ST4S (but not too crashed). If I can get hold of one of these it can donate all the 4S bling bits (Marchesini, Ohlins, ally swingarm etc) to my ST2 and donate it's engine to the 888.

There's been a perfect one for my purposes on eBay at bike-enders but at £1995 "buy it now" it's a bit rich for me at the moment. I know there's a "submit best offer" button, but he's gonna want more than £8.53 for it...

I've been following this conversation and that power sounds good ! my 916sp (955) motor is currently being modified so I guess I should see at least that much from the work being done.
Includes - new valve seats for 37mm inlet & 31mm exhaust valves + gas flowing and combustion chamber re-shaping. She's getting 431 inlet and G exhaust cams fitted up & the Crank + Omega high comp (955) pistons balanced (the 955 barrels drop straight onto the sp cases). I also managed to get hold of a '955 Corse FIM chip' and will run with this with the current twin injector setup. Not sure how this chip will perform, time on the dyno will tell.
A slipper clutch is also being fitted :D
I've stuck with the standard Pankl rods and not gone down the Ti rod route, I hope that's a decision I don't regret...
Have you guys fitted up a power commander to help fine tune mapping ?

DaveB916
03-Jan-2006, 15:31
£8.53 !!!! Steady there you nearly bought yourself a complete old Senna ....lolol

Rob B
03-Jan-2006, 15:34
Neil,

No the the PC route, as yet. I have an FIM, single injector chip in at the mo' and that was easy to set up and covers all the PC, type issues too. You program it like a PC. We think that t will have enough adjustment to meet the fuel requirements of the engine as is. I'll probably start it up on Alan's mid chip and use the two ECU option when we are at the Dyno in a few weeks time.

I will be using a PC3 for the SB8 though. That doesn't have the removable/flashable chip in its ECU. Horses for courses, eh?

:D:D:D:D:D

Finally finished & reconnected the last mods into the loom. 996 switchgear via adapters to the 888 loom plus some minor odds and sods.

Battery fitted and all mods 100% working.

Never mind how many times Ducati have changed wiring colurs and connector types over the years, I was impressed and pleased to find how easy it was to track the information and cut and reconnect with confidence.

Rgds, Rob

Oh yes, now I have the the lovely chirping of the imobiliser in service mode to accompany the final assembly...... Where did I leave the wire cutters

19-Feb-2006, 09:44
Nah, still waiting for the final version of the rear axle. I've also got to take all the clocks apart to fit a carbon surround. One the axle is in i want to do a front to back bolt check and then I'll pop the airbox and body work on.

A few hours work I guess.

Oh yes. It'll also need a trip to Motorapido so Steve can work his dyno magic on the FIM chip. Gis original set up was spot on so I am hoping he'll be able to get this spec as sweet.

I'd be interseted to hear what you think about the final colour scheme. The lack of decals may be a little bland/subtle, but as the bike its a bitsa, in the end, I decided that I didn't want it to end up as an SPS or SP4 wanabee.

I don't know how you manage with such a tiny garage and lack of tools and equipment :frog:

I like it. Don't like to hear it described as a 'bitza' though, that phrase smacks of shoehorning TL1000 lumps or summat into 916's (or going back to my childhood the Tribsas, Norbsas and Tritons where the engine was never, ever designed to fit that frame)

With a 996 engine that uses the same basic crankcases, pretty much the same engine design, with the same heritage but just a few evolutionary steps along the road I think that bikes like this retain their integrity.

I hope so anyway, because I'd like to do something similar to mine in the fullness of time - keeping all the original bits of course

Rob,

Why did you fit extensions between the yellow rear fork and ball joints ??? The bike fits the rocking lever assy. with excentrics ...

You might be disappointed when riding if you don't adjust the rocking lever ???

Can you explain ???

Phil911

Rob B
27-Feb-2006, 20:12
Phil,

I might be wrong, but from my experience with racecar suspension design. I think the rocking lever is set/adjusted to give a rocker ratio that changes the rising/falling rate. I wanted rear ride height, thus the added length of the hoop.

Frank,

That's the way they do the hose on many of the period 8xx race bikes. I could have wrapped it right around the top of the swing arn and down, anti clockwise, (I used to have it that way on the other floater) but I fancied the "rep" look with the mini caliper.

All, Thanks for the +ve comments.

Well, many thanks to Steve (and the boys for putting up with the row) at Motorapido.

He has worked his dyno magic so the 888 now has its FIM chip trimmed for the new motor. We have a rewarding 126.9bhp and 81.2 lf/ft of torque. I can't wait to pick it up as Steve took it for a test blat and tells me it pulls really well and wheelies like a goodun!!
