View Full Version : how much for a 749?

how much do u think a 749 2nd hand, 6000 miles should be?
Not sure of that, but look on Ebay if you want a 749 there is always one or two, Try to get the 749S if you can.
Well, as a kind of guide, I recently paid £6,500 for a brand new 749, got nearly £2k off! :burn:

6500 for a new 749! thats a great deal! and all the ppl on this board (chris999) keep saying i should pay 6500 for a 2nd hand 749!
It was a very good deal, but I did manage to get the dealership another couple of buyers, but I reckon, if a dealership still has a 2005 in stock, you should get for around £6,700, just haggle hard, especially if you have the cash and no part-ex...dealers are desperate to sell at the mo. Got termi's fitted at cost as well for £900 fitted. :burn:

My advice is to sit down and email every dealer in the country. By the sounds of things, there is a lot of good deals out there to be had if you want a new bike. If you dont ask, you dont get. Its winter just now (if you haven't realised), perfect time to do it.

a new 749 for 6.5K is a very good deal - my concern at the moment is what will it be worth in 6 months ? If dealers are desperate to sell and giving great deals like this will they want a bike in as a part ex and if so i dont think you'll get much for it.
my 749 S cost 9.8K new - at 12 months old and 2.5K miles on the clock I was offer £6500 px against a new 999 !!!!!! thats nearly a 33% loss in one year!
which is why you must buy at the best price you can...or you will live to regret it! I know that by this time next year, the 749 will probably be worth £4k at the most!

i'd say they r taking the **** by asking for a ridiculous price
There was an article in last weeks MCN about this, but Ducati dealers are having a nightmare with 749. They have paid up stock on a bike that is not shifting and is depreciating by the minute, it is clearly a buyers market especially on that bike. I would say the situation is as bad, if not worse, as Bennelli's RS's. They have halved the RRP, and still they cannot shift them, now that is a shocker!!!
My advice is to ring round all the Ducati dealers and basically gage who is the most desperate. That's what I did when I bought my R1 and saved £1500 of list price, got 0% finance over 3 years and paid no deposit...(and they said it could'nt be done....)
However, if you want the Ducati experience and are worried about residuals you need to be looking at the 996SPS (£6500+) or 996R (£8500+). A bigger outlay but you will loose less money over time. It’s exactly the same as buying a used/new car, if you want to take a massive hit with a car, buy a jag. If you want to loose virtually nothing buy a facelift model Boxster 3.2S in black with black leather, fully loaded. The only problem is finding one, and the fact that you have to drive round in a car that screams 'I cannot afford a 911....'

thanks for the advice. will b doing exactly that
You should be able to pick up a new 749 for virtually trade, as most dealers wil be glad to see the back of them. You may need to take a weekend off, but gage which 3 dealers are suggesting the best deal and drive to them all with a lump of cash, remember CASH IS KING!!!

I've always found that if you take their finance you get a better deal, as long as you are able to do early settlement with no penalties.
Yeah that's why I got my R1 cheap (no cheap jokes please...), the dealer gets a nice commision chq for every finance deal. However, no Ducati dealer is gonna give you a discount and 0%. They are under strict orders to protect Mr C's image and brand, even if their product is a dog.

I wouldn't rise to it Chris.
I told him exactly how to find out the price of a 749 in my very first reply to him on the other thread.
If he asks nicely i have a copy of the latest GAP sat right in front of me.
The questions still begs belief. You either have the money or you don't???
One minute it is 4k, then you have 5, then 4.4k.
What the hell are you doing playing online Poker trying to win enough to buy a Duke???
Top tip.
Decide on a budget and stick to it, work out the cost of insurance, servicing etc (If you don't have a clue about some of the figures ask we will be more than happy to help)
Then and only then start shopping around for bikes.
It will stop you wasting your own time but more importantly the good people of this boards time who are trying to flog their bikes by making bids that you have no intention of backing up.
Regards
ScottyB
IF YOU are serious about buying a bike GO and look for one, there are a couple of 749 s for sale on Ebay in your budget.
Or as others have said ring around, you have had alot of help so now its up to you to find it, poeple on here cant do it for you !!

Well said Scotty B!
Bibjo,
Lets just set the record straight here. I believe you got a 749 for 6.5K. Well done for that. My hat's off to you!
But lets be more accurate, is it a UK bike or an import?
Is it a Hybrid (2005 bike with a 2004 colour chassis, we're all selling them cheaper) or a new 2005 bip with red chassis?
OR is it a 2004 machine (old fairing) reg'd in 2005?
What dealer was it? Are they a recognised UK dealer or what?
What kind of intro did you give the dealer in terms of your mates? Did he sell three bikes instead of just one? (obviously you are all going to get a good deal if that's the case, 'specially at this time of year)
I've got to be honest, that price is SIGNIFICANTLY (think hundreds & hundreds of pounds!) cheaper than we as dealers buy the bikes (remember i'm a store, I have a fairly good idea of price here)
I would suggest that 6.5K is a poor "guide" as you put it?
I can't see a dealer "blowing his brains out" to the tune of hundreds of pounds just to clear a bike off the showroom floor. Any dealer worth his salt is gonna break even at least!
This could have simply been a one off deal in that dealership for some strange reason!
Trouble is, hundreds of guys may go into their local dealer and think they are getting ripped off after reading this thread.
I've gotta say, you need to be careful with comments like "a 749 will be worth £4,000 this time next year"
Maybe you're right there but I SERIOUSLY doubt it! No offence mate, but my humble opinion is you're miles off with that prediction!!!
Posiden is spot on, this kind of open discussion on deals can seriously harm all of our residual values (I ride a 749R, see my avatar).
It's nice to be loud & proud of the deal you got but you need to be EXACT about the circumstances on which the deal was based otherwise you are poisoning the market for the rest of the 749 owners and buyers out there (including yourself mate)
Truth is 749's have not sold as many as in recent years this year, but they are buy no means a knightmare. Eg, I sold 2 last week at good money. Year on year some bikes are better than others, it could be totally different next year, go figure!!
Best advice is, don't just think about the cost of buying the machine, think of the cost of owning it for 3-4 years (servicing, parts, clothing, problem solving, help, community, etc!) try and develop a good close friendship with your local team, support your local dealer and you should get much more back in return (I like to think my customers do!). THAT'S THE WAY TO SAVE MONEY IN THE LONG RUN!:D:D
Megalite, Chris999 is right! A used 749 IS worth £6.5k Dependant on price, spec etc.
You gotta play the game here chap, offering a few hundred quid off the asking price is the norm, not a couple of grand. It's not a rice rocket! (no offence to the jap owners, just a feeble jest honest!! :D) Trust me i'm a dealer!!:lol:
RCA, I just can't agree to the comparison between a Benelli and a 749! Don't believe everything you read mate! At one point this year I couldn't get enough 749's. In my humble opinion they are one of the best bikes Ducati have ever built, thats why i've had two of em! I had a 998S before that!
RCA, i'm reading your post and no offence mate, your opinion seems based on the MCN story. Again don't belive everything you read in there, trust me!
Your comments on Porsche are controversial to say the least!
The Boxter is one of the best handling Porsches they make, (the new hard top Boxter Caymen (spelling?) is apparently astounding) ask anyone!
I think a chat with you would be good fun mate, you seem to like a bit of controversy!! ;)
Dave996, you're right too mate, finance pays a little, helps the deal out, not masses but it's a step in the right direction!
Finally 749's are just the bogs dollocks! Anyone wanting one, don't think about it just buy one they are truly awe inspiring!!
:):):):)

I'm glad you posted Martin, as going by some of the replies on this thread, I was beginning to think that I'd bought a very unpopular bike, even though I love it and enjoy riding it.
Re the bike. This was bought from a main dealer, is a uk bike and is an official 2005 bike with the red/black frame. The situation with the dealer re price was that they were matching a price from another dealer (that I kind of made up to a certain extent). I also said that I knew of a couple of people who might be interested in two of their bikes. This was true, but they could only take my word for this. From what I could gather, this was a one-off deal, and I know it was a very good price. I dont think they made any money out of the deal, but I think they get some kind of bonus from the manufacturer? I used to be in the car trade and I know does happen. At the end of the day, I got on very well with them guys and it may have helped that I was a female...shouldnt say that I know....but sometimes it is an advantage! I hope my bike doesnt depreciate too much by next year, but if dealers go down that low, then who in their right mind is going to pay more? I think that if a dealer has any left at this time of year, they will sell at cost. Maybe I shouldnt have disclosed the price...I was just trying to help.

Again ... I'm also a 2003 749s owner from new and love the bike. Does everything I ask of it ... and then some.
Also, not bragging but, I have a 911 which I will be selling in spring to buy a boxster. Nothing to do with money, I just want a 2 seater open top sports car and consider the Boxster to be the best option. Definetly not a case of being a wanna be 911 owner

When you say you don't think they made any money! I can guarantee you they lost FORTUNES on that deal! :puzzled: I'm honestly further astounded that they were matching another dealers price, that's just madness mate!!
That means there are some nutters out there dedicating a significant part of their sales bonus towards a sale! Confusing! Like you say, most likely a one off or a rarity at least!
To anyone else out there, don't worry this is not an accurate reflection of every deal happening! Winter madness maybe!
Thanks for you're honesty Bibjo!

Well said Martin. I don't know why people insist on saying how great a deal they got. This is a public forum so they had a good stab in devaluing everyones bike, INCLUDING THEIR OWN, so not such a great deal or a smart move to broadcast. When these bargain bikes pop up in the For Sale section, and I am looking or one, I will waste no time in printing this thread off and reminding the seller what the paid for it. Am sure anyone else looking in would do the same.
The dealers involved dont help either, and I wonder what view Ducati will take. I had a mate who worked for a major car manufacturer. Dealers who broke the rules, suffered, through being at the end of the queue for special low volume runs.
Its good we all help each other out but some things should be done on U2U.
The 749 is a great bike. I just picked up a Kwak zx636R which I am real happy with but its not a 749.
well 749er. I cannot see the problem in making public what I paid for my bike....maybe its sour grapes on your part that you didnt do the same instead of buying your kwak...I will not be selling my 749 and shall probably buy a 996 next spring to go alongside the 749...I didnt buy the 749 as an investment, but to ride....just didnt want to pay through the nose for it....dont care if it devalues....I can afford it!:frog:

Bibjo,
This thread is a perfect example of why customers should not discuss what they paid for their bike.
See my posts further up this thread. It doesn't help anyone at all.
1) The customers that paid more than you originally will be p***ed off.
2) The customers that own 749's and feel theirs has just been devalued dramatically because you forgot what you paid will be p***ed off.
3) The new customers that go into their local dealer and can't get as good a deal as that (for whatever reason) will be p***ed off.
4) The dealers (like me) that feel they are put in an awkward position because of this misguided thread will be p***ed off.
5) The people that are trying to buy used machines and have just been given false hope as to what they can afford will be p***ed off.
6) The customers that are trying to sell a used machine on this forum (or anywhere else on the planet) will be scratching their heads thinking they are over priced when they're not........They will be p***ed off.
7) Ducati Uk and Ducati in Italy (I know they both read the threads on this forum) will be upset! (better not say p***ed off here :))
Need I say more? I could keep rattling on here!!
In effect, the only people / person that is not p***ed off is you really! That's why it's no so good to announce prices on a global public forum. Remember these comments can be read by anyone on the planet with a PC. These comments can have a very far flung effect! :(
We all have to remember that, not just me as a dealer. We all love the bikes, that's why we are here. Get behind the brand, we will ALL benefit financially and personally if we do.
Well done for securing that deal, you've got an amazing bike for unbelievably cheap money!!
However, I feel it better to reassure the buying / selling public that this is not a typical case. I really appreciate your honesty and comments up this thread. It's good to get feedback from all the Duc owners out there. Especially female riders, I wish there were more. (not for those reasons Davie  )
By the way the dealer is still making a loss there! As I said above there are definitely reasons why this has happened but we still haven't gotten to the bottom of it yet. I'm not saying your are telling porkies here either! I mean there must be internal dealer factors you could simply not be aware of at work. The dealer would have to come on here and explain how they managed this.
But is it really worth it? Maybe? I think it best to let sleeping dogs lie and get back to having fun on here, the way we should at all times!
Let's leave prices to the showrooms, it's such a sensitive issue, someone's always going to feel their nose put out of joint and none of us really wants that do we?!?
Right, it's Saturday morning and we're getting busy, must dash! Everyone have a good weekend!
Martin ;)
[Edited on 17-12-2005 by Martin Ducati Glasgow]
ok,ok....stop shouting!.....when I put the price I paid I had no idea that it wasnt the going rate for this time of year and didnt mean to pee anyone off...I take your points but I think even the dealers realise that the dukes are overpriced compared to the jap bikes, not only that, but they are usually a tad unreliable & cost double to service = no sale?as I replied to 749er...thousands of apologies & wished I'd kept my trap shut! :sniff:
I don't care if people want to discus what they paid for there bikes in public.
as someone who will never buy a bike brand new I like to see prices coming down any how.
its up to the individual. don't need a dealer to tell them otherwise.
and if you believe everything you read on message boards. I know a man who paid £4000 for a brand new 749 no actually they gave it to him o no sorry they paid him to take it away.
do you think prices might come crashing down now ?
maybe not
1) The customers that paid more than you originally will be p***ed off.
Too bad
2) The customers that own 749's and feel theirs has just been devalued dramatically because you forgot what you paid will be p***ed off.
get over it its just a basic model
3) The new customers that go into their local dealer and can't get as good a deal as that (for whatever reason) will be p***ed off.
go somewhere else then
4) The dealers (like me) that feel they are put in an awkward position because of this misguided thread will be p***ed off.
you wont sell it for les than you want anyhow
5) The people that are trying to buy used machines and have just been given false hope as to what they can afford will be p***ed off.
don't believe the hype
6) The customers that are trying to sell a used machine on this forum (or anywhere else on the planet) will be scratching their heads thinking they are over priced when they're not........They will be p***ed off.
stop dreaming you know what its worth at the end of the day
7) Ducati Uk and Ducati in Italy (I know they both read the threads on this forum) will be upset! (better not say p***ed off here )
why they'll just be glad to see more people getting into the brand.

Bibjo, i'm really not shouting at all here, just putting across some of my opinions. Sorry if you get that impression from my last post. ;)
Keefer, i'm trying to protect everyone's interest here, that's all mate!
1) The customers that paid more than you originally will be p***ed off.
Too bad
That's a bit rough!I'm simply trying to remain sensitive to the masses and the bigger national picture here mate!
2) The customers that own 749's and feel theirs has just been devalued dramatically because you forgot what you paid will be p***ed off.
get over it its just a basic model
I can see why you would say that but you're missing the point chap! The same rules apply for all bikes from the cheapest to the most expensive. This 749 thread is merely an example! Call it an M620 or an 999R then!!!
3) The new customers that go into their local dealer and can't get as good a deal as that (for whatever reason) will be p***ed off.
go somewhere else then
That's not a viable or prefferable solution to most and doesn't build any customer / dealer relationships. I know for a fact the vast majority of customers would prefer to deal locally on a level playing field than feeling they have to travel. Neither does it help the network of dealers that have put themselves there for the benefit of the customers (it's not all about making money you know. Well not to me anyway!)
4) The dealers (like me) that feel they are put in an awkward position because of this misguided thread will be p***ed off.
you wont sell it for les than you want anyhow
yeah but we like to make sales, introduce new people to the brand and make money whilst still looking after the customer interest as best we can. I don't like feeling I have to sell my soul just to make a buck or two! Sometimes I feel people resent us making money, God forbid that ever happens?
5) The people that are trying to buy used machines and have just been given false hope as to what they can afford will be p***ed off.
don't believe the hype
I don't need to believe it. In my position I face it daily. I know what the hype is, plus I am aware of the reality better than most. I've seen, on numerous occaions, peoples hopes dashed when they get a reality check!!
6) The customers that are trying to sell a used machine on this forum (or anywhere else on the planet) will be scratching their heads thinking they are over priced when they're not........They will be p***ed off.
stop dreaming you know what its worth at the end of the day
Yeah mate, I know what they are worth, but threads like this don't exactly help anyone else figure out what the score is. I'm not dreaming here, this is my job!
7) Ducati Uk and Ducati in Italy (I know they both read the threads on this forum) will be upset! (better not say p***ed off here )
why they'll just be glad to see more people getting into the brand.
I doubt (in fact I know) Ducati are not thrilled about their brand being devalued, just like the rest of us. I go to dealer meetings both here and Italy, i've spoken to the top management personally on many occasions regarding this topic.
Keefer, i'm really not trying to be argumentative here, i'm thinking of everyones best interest, including yours and mine
;) Discounting happens, it's a way of life! I accept that. I may even do it occasionally dependant on the circumstances.
The "Ducati Experience" is all about community, fun, riding bikes, solidarity amonst like-minded folk and much, much more. In my opinion, this is the only brand with such an attraction, that's why I love it so much. I've made some true friends in here and had a real laugh doing it! See last weeks thread about the Scottish contingent Christmas night out!
As long as each customer feels looked after. That's the big picture. Comparisons between one to another in my experience don't always help, they can create discord that otherwise wouldn't exist!
Just my opinion though!
:):):)
I've just bought a brand new 999R for £1.50 :rodent:
