View Full Version : Beauty and the Beast.... A seasonal rant on the cleaning of a 916...

Day 1:
Well had a check over of the bike last night and apart from being covered in shite, it's pretty decent.... Chain is looking fairly suspect and may need swapping, will know more after a good clean.

Bought a bolt kit, so everything that's holding something in will be getting swapped out for a nice new bolt.

Wheels and disks are coming off tonight and they are the first to be cleaned and prepped. Bodywork tomorrow for cleaning, and then most of the stickers removed and a good polish.

thurs will be draining the fuel system, removing the battery and changing the coolant....

Then back after Xmas to crack on with swingarm/exhaust/frame/engine cleaning and getting ready.

Given a couple of weeks the old thing should be transformed before going up to Cornerspeed to have the bling thrown on and will then be ready for play time

day 2:
i found nothing particularly bad when strippping it... Spindle was stuck on front a bit.... all the bolts in the calipers will need replacing along with the others i'm swapping. But all came apart pretty sweetly.

Not removed the battery yet due to not having read alarm booklet for the Spyball and left the fuel tank on because of lack of space in the car

day 2 pm:
Well we're getting there... bodywork was cleaned, stripped, then cleaned inside and out then polished.... looks 100% better already.... Discs came up lovely as did the wheels.... so they're all ready to go back on.

Task today is to give the swingarm, chain and sprockets a clean over lunchtime and then the front end of bike this evening. Re-fit all the bits.... and forget about it till after Xmas

day 3:
Well **** me that was a bad plan......

I can actually see the swingarm, the forks and the rear caliper now
Took off the front sprocket cover and it's just ridiculous in there... Sooooo much crap in the area you wouldn't believe it... i'm beginning towonder if Dave used a spade to put chain lube on. My bolt kit arrived but there's no chance of getting that done yet. Sidestand is off to get better access to the area around front sprocket.

Rear shock is a disgrace so that's getting whipped off, but i have a much nicer one already waiting to go on, thanks to the previous owner :). I'm actually disgusted anyone could let a bike get this covered in dirt though.

I was believe it or not hoping to get the bodywork back on it tonight... but there's no chance of that... i've got to clean the radiator and oil cooler first, the front calipers and the clutch side of the engine...

Damn it's tough.

In some ways yeah it's a great little project, but patience isn't a strong point of mine..

I'm a bit upset that really i could do with dropping the engine and getting it sprayed, but that's outside of my techincal remit, (and the fact i'm doing it in works underground carpark LOL).

Need to work out what to use on the calipers on Friday before attacking them with Autosyl to get them hopfully lovely and shiney.

Will be looking out for a Rad and Oil Cooler as they are not as nice as i'd ideally like.

Stainlesss set of 250 with some bolts, washers and nuts in sizes M6 M8 M10 and various lengths. Ebay. £11.99 including postage.

I wouldn't like to say what it does at this stage mate i'm afraid, i only managed to get 1 bolt swapped today and that was the one for the hub end of the chain guard :borg: :sing:

i wasn't even going to change the engine ones until i discusssed with Crust last night, was just going to do the mounts for everything, but sod it, i might as well do the lot :)

How easy is it to replace all the engine bolts then Steve? Must admit the bolts all over my Multi look as if they've spent 25 years on the beach by a toxic waste outlet so would like to change them to something that's not gonna show the effects of riding through winter? Presumably Stainless steel fasteners will do the job?

weeksy2
21-Dec-2005, 15:09
Ain't got a clue at this stage... .will just be doing 1 by 1 swapping like for like but with nice Stainless ones instead....

antonye
21-Dec-2005, 15:16
I do the same - each time something comes apart I just swap the crap bolts our for a stainless one.

It's a good idea to buy a whole load of assorted size bolts if you don't have them already, and eBay seems to be the easiest/cheapest place to get them from in mixed packs.

Don't think I have one anymore ... it went with the 996.

Might have a carbon V-piece though ...

well the calipers are done front and rear, i'm not 100% happy, but they are pretty decent. Swingarm, engine and radiator/oil cooler are all pretty much as good as they so it's almost complete.

Exhausts will be ok, and the rest of the bike is pretty much sweet.

Will get the pads fitted back in tomorrow and if i get a chance get the wheels fitted back on there. Once that's done i'll be happy.

So when will she be on a track? DSC trackday - if you join????

weeksy2
11-Feb-2006, 17:30
1st trackday is on the 25th April at Mallory. I'm booked in on the Cadwell DSC day mate. I've joined... just ballsed up the last (2nd) cheque i sent to Lizzie and sent it for too little. She now has the 3rd cheque to make up the difference. Trust me, i'm a member :)

Was chatting to Crust today and he's just bought a nice grinder which i will use on the Heel plates and also a Sonic cleaning machine which i'm going to try the calipers with :)

weeksy2
24-Feb-2006, 20:06
Well the on-going project is going along swimmingly :)

THe carbon heel plates are fitted and look nice.

Downside, my Caliper bolts that were looking lovely are going :(

the upside is that i've got a nice set of Gold Nitride later forks being fitted with 65mm spacing (and smaller pitch on the bolts.)

The Gold 3 spokes are getting picked up Sunday and being fitted early next week.

I think that's about it until i can afford a nice pair of P34 calipers.

Can't wait to ride this thing one day...

New battery being bought on Tuesday... so we're good to go pretty soon :)

weeksy2
28-Feb-2006, 22:56
Well tonight was the last step in my process of building the super sooper bike :)

Fitted was a set of Gold 3-spokes with Diablo Corsas. Gold nitride forks which were from Bike Enders and are in LOVELY condition. Sweet.

Many thanks to Skids for all the help fitting forks and swapping calipers etc... you should have had pancakes mate, they are yummy :)

Pics will be taken tomorrow when i get it back up on stands. (just getting air out of brakes :) )

i'm very happy :)

weeksy2
31-Mar-2006, 09:02
Well today was the first ride out.

The slipper clutch is as expected a little 'gratey' on 1st gear, and has a slight judder on the way down caused by baseket wear.

Overall my impressions of the bike are 'why the **** did i ever sell mine' Worst biking mistake i've ever made (or maybe that was Keevil racing in 2001)

I'm sitting here trying to think of any faults.... it pulls superbly, turns like a dream and braking is sweet. Need a bit better weather to see when i start going a little quicker into bends and how the handling is.

Faultless....

28-Apr-2006, 09:56
Well the bike is coming along nicely as time passes.

Had a disaster when the chain snapped this weekend at Oulton but no damage. Phew.

So what's new then.

Well i have an Ohlins rear shock currently winging it's way to me.
And a pair of Brembo P34's also going in the post today.

I think that's pretty much it for this year unless a pair of 5 spokes in gold come up at the right money...

Will sort out pics asap.

weeksy - are you still looking for OE dzus fasteners? if so, try www.giovanni-moto.com - not sure that web address is 100% correct, so you might have to google some variations.

they're a bit pricey though - £59 IIRC! :o

[Edited on 28-4-2006 by zhed44]

weeksy2
28-Apr-2006, 14:12
ouch.... don't need to be OE ones....

Can be pattern.

Not too worried about the fastners currently until i get the bodywork sorted.

Missed out and a nice 996R fairing in carbon this morning not meeting reserve :(

zhed44
28-Apr-2006, 14:45
i don't know if they are OE or pattern - they are deinitely the same style. if you don't need them to be the same style, and are happy to use the "bigger" style (the ones that are always on ebay), then i might be able to give you the name of some guys who sel them for £10 for a set of 8. i bought some at the ally pally show and they look great and have lasted through the back end of the winter with no tarnishing - i'll see if i can find the packet they came in.

re: fairings: i know how you feel - i missed a mint and fully complete single seat unit the other day that went for £210. my computer froze as i was bidding

28-Apr-2006, 20:47
funny that, my missus is the same. every time she opened the garage there was something new in there :saint:
