in my search for a 2005 999R I found the following bike in Germany:
a ducati dealer is selling a 2005 R with 2.000 miles only for a guy that has been racing. Price is reasonable.
Problems: apparently, the bike had an engine failure and the ducati dealer has changed the pistons, cilinders and the cramshaft under warranty.
Is this a normal failure with such a low mileage?
What kind of driving can produce that?.
What kind of questions or things should I check in the bike to have peace of mind in the future?
The dealer says the engine now is even better than brand new from factory :o
He says fitting a 57mm termi system will burn the lower fairing and is very loud and tricky to fit...
Thanks for the help

Thanks for the help
mine has a 54 fitted and it burnt through 2 sets of fairings.
both a 54 and 57 are fine if fitted correctly. mine wasnt initially but it is fine now it has been doe by a dealer who knows what they are doing.
i would leave the bike unless it comes with a ducati warranty for the new engine. even then i would look around first .
sorry i might be a bit thick but !!! "sellin a bike for a bloke thats been racin " says it all to me :D
my answers to your questions (my opinion only )
is it normal for mileage ? yes if racing
what type of riding can produce this ? read above
but then again whats a reasonable price ? i mean i would give him 5k for it :D
i think thats reasonable :D:D:D

Not wanting to contradict anyone, but, if you can get some sort of warranty and pay about half market price .... buy it.
I agree with carbon...and as its a 2005 model it will still be under warranty and you will be able to purchase a further years warranty from any official Ducati dealer taking it to 3yrs.....Or there is a feckin top S4 for sale in market place!!!!!
hey boyz just my opinion :D all i,m thinkin is if the guy race,s wot engine are you really gettin :o sorry for being a downer , the deal might be mint !!!
Italia moto in lincoln had a new 04 model for £14500 ish why buy second hand.
;)

This is why I said buy it, I agree it's a gamble, but, if it's very cheap it would be a gamble I would take.

Erm, what's a cramshaft? :)
Was it the crank or the cam? This would give some insight into what damaged it!
Berto's not quite right here, if it's been a race bike and the German subsidiary know it's been a race bike (very possible), Ducati MH WILL NOT honour any warranty on the machine, check your service books, explanations in there in black and white. Be very careful here, this could be extremely thin ice!!!:o
Also the third year warranty can only be sold by the dealer to a punter who is buying the bike from the dealer. This is not an "off the peg" item. If they won't honour the first 2 years the third isn't gonna happen.
Even if they don't know it was a race bike now and if at any time they find out it has been, they will cease further claims.
You need to find out more history here, the money may be worth it though, good luck!:D
Martin
by the way carbon nice new ped you got there ;)
Martin is not quite right here,As the dealer has already made a claim against the warranty it would be pretty hard for them to now say the warranty is not valid on this bike. And as jesus is not going to race the bike it would be strange for the dealer to turn away cash for a warranty extension. The only way to be sure is to ask these questions to the supplying dealer cos as we all know there are good dealers and bad ones....

Beg to differ Berto!
DMH can AT ANY TIME refuse to pay out on claims if they deem the bike has been raced, they are obviously not aware of this bikes history, if they were, they wouldn't pay out it's that simple. If they are made aware in future by whatever means, claims will not be processed (or certainly examined in fine detail beforehand). Again check your t&c in your service book.
Whether they have paid out now or not is totally irrelevant for future claims. It's not completely up to the dealer if the claim is paid. All (especially larger) claims are approved by DMH, end of story.
All it takes is DMH to find out its history and it could maybe be a hassle IF further claims arise! Especially as it is obviously now public knowledge the bike is an ex racer!
Berto, your right about the fact there are more questions needing asked to the supplying dealer, these could all sort the issue but (going by the book) they simply shouldn't have sorted the bike in the first place!
Sorry, these are the facts!

Well, nice heated debate.... at least I have some good questions to ask regarding the warranty.
I just got the VIN number from the seller. Ducati Italia will be my first call Monday morning... I will let you guys know.

So, any news??

No news. Still waiting for Ducati's reply about the history of the bike and all the warranty issues solved.
Regarding the price, the situation was quite funny. The ducati dealer said it was for sale at 22.000 eur, BUT is posted at his internet site for 20.900 eur. Without starting a negatiation by my part he said straight away he could go down to 20.000 eur!.
I found brand new 999R '05 ducati's in Germany for 25.500 eur and '04 models for 20.000eur., just for comparison.
Once I know more about the bike, I'll make the guy an offer, probably in between 15K to 18k euros.... depends on parts discounts, extended warranty cost, and so on..... we'll see
My major concerns is the reputation of the german dealer as a mechanic, since he rebuild the engine. I'm trying german forums to get feedback from this dealer.....

20k eu = £13.7k
not a bad price of the 04 bike! if the 05 bikes was a grand or 2 under that i might be booking a ferry ticket and nipping across for one.
Wonder what the score is with regards to losing the local tax etc for export:eureka::saint:

yeap, not a bad price at www.ztk.de
they're not a Ducati dealer though, and I think they sell parallel imports from Italy. Prices include VAT if I'm not mistaken.
what about a price from Italy? is it more expensive there?
Bit like buying a single malt.........£40 in Scotland.......£20 in Spain!
When did you buy a drink?????:barfy:

No need for the ferry.
They ship it to you for a "small" amount :D
And take off 16% from those prices and you'll have the amount you have to pay in Germany. But then you'll have to pay your VAT. ;)

Thanks very much Bionicle, Ducnow, Nathanhu, Linda 749R......
now, DOES ANYBODY IN GERMANY OR NEARBY CAN HELP ME TO GET SOME FEEDBACK ON A SPECIFIC DUCATI DEALER?
The whole issue now is to find how good this german mechanic is... oh God.
I would appreciate U2U messages as this might not be of interest for the forum....
Ducnow is right, extrange enought, Italy is probably the worst place to get good deals for Duke.
