DK Spares (that well known purveyor of used Ducatis!!) is flogging an original looking 851. Not sure about the mileage.

I saw that!
Too good to be true??
Maybe they think that us Ducati freaks are so sad that we'll climb over ourselves in a frenzy to bid.

If it is an SP2, where are the Ohlins forks/floating discs?
Also the mirrors are later ones, it should have the round ones for that age.

That one on Ebay is not a SP.

Like Douglas has already said wrong mirrors (they should be round). If it is a 888cc then it has been bored out - dual injectors came later if my memory serves me right.

If it was a SP it should have a plaque on the head stock. Most early single seaters where just single seaters....

Nice looker BUT not a SP.

Its chassis number (ZDM85153-000700) relates to an 851. An SP will be 888cc and have an 'S' in the chassis number (ZDM888S*******)

Yep thats the one , I dont know why but it kind of rankles that he picked a few brains then went of and put it up for sale , But thats probably just me :D

Is it an SP ? Not a clue as info on the early SP is thin on the ground . My 89 851 Monoposto is an 888 but I,m pretty sure its just had an engine transplant rather than one of the 100 or so SP,s made iirc for an Italian home race series . I,m not even sure the first SP,s had a plate on the top yolk , Any experts about able to give a definative description of the SP1 ?

I,m pretty sure he,s misread his chassis number and it should read ZDM851S3-000700 As mine is ZDM851S3-0003**

There was no such thing as an SP (1). The first bike was just an SP - and it was 851cc. It was basically a modified Strada, with changes to valve diameter and timing. The rest of the bike was the same as the Strada. The first true SP was the SP2 and it was 888cc. Chassis number should be ZDM888S on a true SP.

Sounds about right to me, the only reference material I can lay my hands on atm is Mick Walkers Ducati 4 valve twins where theres scant mention of the SP (btw the use of SP1 is just to stop the issue getting clouded with people asking "but which SP ?" :) ) and Ian Falloons Ducati desmoquattro performance hand book .

Mick Walker briefly mentions it and says sod all except it was an 888 and Ian Falloon briefly mentions it but thats about it .

Thanks for the heads up on the chassis number , I now have no niggling doubts as to my bike (Not that I did ) but now know its what I always thought it was , A 1989 851 Monoposto with an 888 engine :)

Hi screwy..... long time no speak

Thats an early one you've got there!

Mine was a private import strada - supposed to be an 89 model with alloy tank and the number finishes with 1856 ( from memory) but I thought only 500 were made in 1989?

By the way - I think someone on here recently said that only sp models had a welded joint in the top frame, where it kinks around the front of the petrol tank. I thought all the early 851 models had the weld at this point :puzzled:

Found a ducati's website info about 851's. 888cc were made in 1990 due to WSB Homo. Earlier models were just 851 cc single seat's.

As per my 1989 851, the earlier 851's ran a different crack spindle for the sprag clutch. needed to purchase a monster one.

Lo Phil m8 , Not to sure about numbers produced in 89 , I,m sure I saw something on the net saying how many over the years but can't find it now , and Ive read the same somewhere about the frametubes but don't think its right as mine has the welded tubes also and mines definately a Strada .

Paid £2500 for mine as it happens ,17000 on the clock and came with all its MOT,s but they never mentioned it had an 888 engine fitted at some stage :puzzled: and the log book didnt have the engine number recorded , It was only whilst cleaning it with the fairing off that I noticed its number was ZDM888 :o

I see this 'SP' didn't reach its reserve - even with 30 bidders. Maybe people in the know smelled a rat?

On the up side, if someone did by this bike from this dealer he has a very stronge case of getting money back due to the fact it isn't a SP. Hmmm Like I did with Daytona because they sold me a bike that it wasn't..:sing:
