help is it beyond repair.......

:( Just recieved my frame ,subframe and headlight housing unit back from neighbour as his brother was sandblasting it for me to get powder coated .......Turns out he has SHOTBLASTED it :o...It looks **** and am feeling quite sick at the moment ..
Wanted to cry when i see it and the chassis number is so faint you cant make it out properly..What can be done now i suppose if its powder coated it wil have a flat finish again but what can i do about the chassis number.

any help would be appreciated as im feeling a bit stressed at the mo as all i can see is its now worth f*** all as it is

Know someone who did the same. 2 options. Mask the chasis number before you have it powder coated, then remove the masking after powder coating and clear laquer the area.

Option 2, have it powder coated and don't worry about it.

As for the finish, it will come back smooth. Powder coating covers a lot of surface defects.

What ever happens don't worry about it.

When you come to sell it just explain what happened. If some one does a HPI check the engine and reg will still match.

Do not try to re-stamp it ... it will look a mess and will look dodgy.

Some years ago I had a similar problem and got over it by re-stamping the no's. Not too much hassle if you can find some of the same size font. You could use a hand held engraver and go over the no's that way. If the frame was ever checked the Police have the kit to see if someone has attempted to change the no. not re-instate it, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Ducati frame numbers are dot punched on the newer frames, so I think it's a bit harder than getting the right sized punched kit.

Can you not explain the suituation to the local Police. They wil then check the frame number to make sure its not stolen and they can then stamp on a new one for you and you then get the log book changed to match.

Won't do much for your second hand value though - bikes with history like that are not easy to shift.

When I got a new frame for my 900ss it came with no frame number whatsever. The Ducati dealer didn't have suitable number stamps so arranged for the local Honda dealer to do it for me. They did a cracking job which looked just like it was meant to be there. I would suggest you get it overstamped by someone who knows what they are doing and has proper stamps for the job. You could try your dealer for a start.

Why would it look like a ringer?
If the original number is still on the headstock, adding the same number alongside it for all to see should not be a problem.

I accept that the integrity of the original number has been lessoned slightly by the sandblast but you would hardly be trying to cover up the fact. Or tampering with whats left of the original number.

Open and honest. Perhaps get a dealer to re stamp and keep the paperwork??

Hi Simon, that sounds pretty shite. As others have pointed out you def need to be able to see it for the new M.O.T. system.
Even if it had'nt been virtually rubbed off i doubt you could powder coat over it as the coating is pretty thick and would prob fill the numbers in.
Ive spoken to John at Veloce in Swardestone ( our local Ducati dealer ) he seems to think he would have no prob restamping for you if you take the frame, then tape over them before powder coating. Hope thats of help mate.

As pointed out the original VIN number is a series of dots and so long as you can just about make out where they are I would have thought you could go over them with a automatic hand held dot puncher. Its certainly what I would do if I were in your situation

Cheers for doing that i will defo ask them to do it as i want it to look perfect, the resale value and the struggle to mot it when its due for renewal did worry me ,but not as much as seeing it in its current condition scared the crap out of me and was suprised how quickly the numbers vanished makes ringing a bike to easy..

Did they say how they would do it either letters or dotpunch????

You could always have a laser cut stainless steel plate made and have the numbers punched in !

It was the first thing that was going thro my head when i saw the lack of frame no. and the panic set in :mad::mad:but am quite calm now as i know it can be restamped by dealer (hopefully)...:D:D
