AIUI Ducati USA have supported racers using the 1000SS for quite some time from what I have read on various USA forums so, it would seem nothing new other than perhaps a formalisation of that program.

Here in Finland there is a SS-cup for standard ie-models (ducati performance exhaust and OEM öhlins rear shock are allowed mods).
