Currently logged on Senna3's pc as I have just used it to book us both in, Senna3 in the inters (needs to run in his Desmo Due bike) and I've booked the Advance and hope to take the 996 and the DD bike.
6 places available when I booked so the numbers don't seem to mean much

Natty gave me the heads up on this so just booked today in the inters. Is anybody staying in the area on saturday night - recommendations?

Skidlids, don't think I've had the pleasure but I think I'll be there on an old friend of yours - Old Yella's 748. Did belong to you in a previous life if I'm not mistaken? Looks a bit different now though - maybe you'll be able to tell me bit of it's history.

See you there.

Yep Simon, the 748 was mine and has done Silverstone GP back in Sept 2004, but be careful a month later it was racing on the Club circuit and may want to turn right rather than head off down Hanger straight.

im going to try and stay in the travelodge just up the road from silverstone as i cant be arsed to camp this time of year, only problem is that we wont be leaving cornwall until 5.30 on the saturday night after my mate finishes work, might make last orders fingers crossed

harv shame your not going, you wont beleive your old bike now, fitted a power commander and had it dynoed 107.2 bhp, 3 more than the sigma 853, well chuffed now !!!

andy, did you do the trackday at donington in september the day after british superbikes, there was a guy there on a gauloises r1

may is uggest a garage down the bottom of the paddock, should be easier to find space then

Hi Deej,

Garage down the bottom of paddock sounds good to me, what numbers are they that end?

I wasn't at Donni the day after SBK, I should've been as my mate did it and for some reason I couldn't make it.

Booked up today in Fast group...

Mallory Sat / Silves Sun....Nice weekend.

I'll have #10 DD bike in red and red/blue 748RS.

White VAN - With MERRY PRINTERS written all over it!

So by 'bottom of the paddock' do you mean closer to the first turn, ie turn right as you enter the paddock and go to the end?

[Edited on 22-2-2006 by Chris Wood]

deej
22-Feb-2006, 22:53
yeah down the bottom near the first turn, number 20 or something like that, everyone seems to park at the top/middle so theyre close to the action but if were out the way we can all have our own little gathering

i'll look out for the van, maybe in a van by then or maybe in my seat cordoba with trailer

should be good, starting to look forward it now

i think it was a wise choice for me to go intermiadetes, i thought there would be too many racers in the fast group, pre season practice and all that

weve booked up to stay in the travelodge just outside milton keynes, £26 for the night.

i'd have to leave at 2.30am at the latest to be at silverstone for a 7.30 sign on. £26 for a travelodge is a good deal for me kev.

i get my van tomorrow so you should at least be able to recognise where i am in the paddock/garages

Any more room at the inn?

Could you put up the address and phone number of this travelodge as £26 doesn't sound too bad for me either. Really not a fan of the early morning travel - always really stressful wondering if I'm going to get there in time.

yeah mate

its www.travelodge.co.uk and its the stafford lodge were in i think, type in silverstone as the location and it will give you the 5 nearest options, dont look at towcester as their clever and left that 1 at £55 but the 2nd nearest 1 is only £26 and its just outside milton keynes which is only 9miles from silverstone.

see you there ???

Do you know how secure the car park is?

My bike is just tied onto a trailer which could (in theory) just be unhooked and stolen. Used to use a van so it wasn't really a problem but only done day trips with the trailer so a bit concerned for security reasons. Perhaps I could get a chain and tie the whole trailer round a lampost and the front wheel of the bike? Getting slightly paranoid now?

Thanks all

is there any sets out there that fit over the front lights or will they have to be removed before fitting any race kit

What exactly are you after? I've got a two or three sets in the garage that I was going to put up for sale in the summer. I've got one good set in red and another tattier set in yellow and a few other bits and bobs aswell (red bull stuff). Let me know what u are after and I'll see what I can sort out. If I come up the night before Silverstone, I can bring it with me then?

simon you maybe a star, im only after something to use on trackdays so i am interested in what you have available, can you email me some photos and prices to me at thecornishduke@tiscali.co.uk and i'll ring you back if you leave me your number. im after side panels and top fairing too and maybe a seat unit if possible but not essential ( bip unit if in desperate situation ) although the red bull set sounds interesting too. my old r6 was a red bull rep.
are you definetly going to be at silverstone ??

Harv748
04-Mar-2006, 01:53
Yep...but its a 2 minute job...and I mean 2 minutes.
Seriously...if you want to borrow some...let me know...I am actually thinking of selling them, but thats another story!

I have no problem with you using them...they are not mint, in fact I have a spare panel here that has been down the track, so you could use that one for starters, along with the seat unit which has also been banged about a bit. That just leaves one side panel and the nose cone that are in good condition!

I did think I wasn't going to make this one as the 748 is still in bits and only the pistons have been returned (no barrels though). So enter plan B and dusted off the 996 in the garage, charging the battery as we speak and will be swapping over all the 748 bodywork onto it tomorrow afternoon. Also planning to put some Dunlop intermediate wets on it aswell. I'm not sure if I can find my large rear socket so if I bring my dry weather tyres, would any of you kind sirs mind loaning me the relevant socket if I need to change tyres? I'll try to fit in my paddock stands but not sure about finding the other bits.

Nice to see you guys and thanks for showing me round deej and Chris.

As it was my first time here, I certainly found it different with the combination of very slow infield and very-fast outfield. Totally enjoyed it, I'll have to do it again soon.

skidlids
13-Mar-2006, 01:28
No Andy it doesn't mean any muppet awards
Looks like the head gasket on Deej's van had gone, the final part of the journey to get him to Silverstone was by way of the AA, which meant he couldn't use them to get him home. So he was trying to sort out other means.
He had green flag cover with his van insurance but that only covered 10 miles then £3 plus vat per mile after that, so that would come to a fair bit back to Cornwall.

Dom there is no garage 20 at Silverstone so we settled for my mental age and ended up in garage 11

Thanks mate...really chuffed with the bike..went like stink for a 20k mile 748 (14/39 gearing was cock on for silverstone), and the handling was great - managed a 2.26m lap which I thought was OK considering the zero track temperature and the fact that I couldnt feel my fingers after 5 minutes...!!

Just a bit of front end chatter under hard braking to dial out and then we can get stuck into the new season..!!

Good to meet you boys..thanks for the company..!

PS Big up to Chris for lending me his tyre warmers !!! (V.nice DD bike mate)

£1200 that is costly for a head gasket job and £700 is hell of lot for a tow. Living down your neck of the woods and doing trackdays is never going to be cheap but you certainly don't ned the extra costs. A hire van comes to mind :eureka:

Still it was good to meet you and see that you were enjoying the trackday, hopefully your next one will be less costly and more enjoyable

Yep, good to see you get back ok Deej, although they certainly lightenened your pocket, b-stards.... I'd be parking the van in the sellers front room window by now... Hope to see you again on another one,

going to argue like hell with direct line and try to get a refund for the truck. theyve sent me a customer satisfaction questionnaire which has been filled in, all positively of course !!!:lol::lol:

i'll compare the pricesthat freeways motors were quoting to what ive been quoted now im home.

freeways. locallly
radiator £210 £95
water pump £95 £25
thermostat £65 £15
head gasket set £150 £85
head gasket bolts £150 £15
skimmed head £400 £40

this is all with vat to be added so you can see why i paid to get it recovered rather than be robbed blind by those cowboys. the radiator doesnt even need replacing:flame::flame:

kev a hire van isnt cheap these days as they all have a mileage charge if you do over so many !!!

andy would be good to meet up with you guys again but unless direct line cough up i wont be on any more trackdays this year

the engine is beyond econimical repair so it means either a new engine or scrap it !!! not really sure what to do for the best, spend the money or cut my losses :puzzled::puzzled:

Bugger... thats not good Deej.

Have you checked over the rest of the van? If its all good and not done starship miles, I would look at a recon engine, although it has brpught you a fair degree of bad luck and maybe due to scrap,

I used to own a van with a mate. He used it on an everyday basis and I had dibs on it whenever I did trackdays or motocrossing. It was great at first but when it started costing me money, we decided to get rid of it. I now have a trailer - very little to go wrong with it and it folds up out of the way when not in use. If you only use the van for trackdays, I wouldn't bother with it. The amount it costs to keep on the road in terms of insurance, road tax, tyres etc doesn't make a lot of sense.

Buy a two/three bike trailer with a group of mates, split the cost and get a removeable towbar on your car. All of this is assuming you have a reliable car of course. I would recommend this route as this is exactly what I have done and have no regrets. The added benefit is you don't have an eyesore of a vehicle sitting leaking oil on your driveway and taking up space for 98% of the year.

Oh, a couple more things: check that your car can have a towbar fitted. I didn't and ended up changing my car when I found out - from an M3 to an M5 :o and don't forget the RAC cover. ;)

Good luck anyway and hope to meet you at a track again (hopefully soon).

Thats exactly my setup too Marchesini, but not the BMW type.

Bleedin eck M5!! Dad used to have one and if its similar, it would leave the trailer behind at lights !!!

Yes, it is a bit weird being in this 400bhp saloon car and stuck in the slow/middle lane of the motorway pulling a trailer doing no more than 60mph officer.

I still have to get used to the fact that the bike isn't going to topple over on roundabouts - I have never checked my mirrors so much!

What trailer did you get? I got one of the BikeLug foldup jobbies, quite pricey but dismantles into 4 pieces and three locking pins and takes no longer than 3 minutes to put together. Really nice bit of kit and they have just redesigned it so it looks even nicer now (and also may be cheaper??)

When's your next trackday then?

Simon, my trailer is shared with my dad and is home-made by one of the classic bike chaps, certainly does the job, although not sure if it will hold two big bikes....

Thinking of doing Cadwell on 24th April - No Limits - £99, although want to get down to Silverstone again this year, really enjoyed it. I'll post to see if anyone else going to Cadders.

well it doesnt get any better, found out today that the wifes punto has probably got a cracked head too
recon engine is well over a £1000 plus fitting on a exchange basis
a second hand engine is risky
whats the van worth as a rolling chassis with no engine
shall i scrap it and sell it bit by bit on the dreaded fleabay

a van is a safer option for me than a trailer as its secure over night at a travelodge and secure when i get home at midnight, leave it locked in the van and put it away the following evening.

lastly and the very last option is selling the duke to pay for it as my thread in the 748 section. not the way i want to go but it may be a case of needs must
